  1. Great site with loads of helpful information!

    Here is the dealio-

I'm trying to convert all my VHS tapes to dvd..

I have- Canopus 100, Adobe Premiere, TMPGEnc Plus

I'm able to capture into an .avi file without any problems. I read a guide on how to set TMPGEnc so I could convert to DVD.

I did this with the following settings- From this guide http://dvd-hq.info/Compression.html

    Video

    720x480
    29.97 fps
    1150 kpbs bitrate

    Audio

    44100 hz
    2 ch stereo
    102 kbps bitrate

Now here is where I run into problems, I tried to burn it on dvd-r disk using nero (read some of the guides here and it looks like some people have problems with nero and burning dvd's, it works for some and not others). As soon as I put it into my apex 600 or 660 (not sure which model, can't remember) it says disk error.

So I have Roxio 6 EZ CD, dvd builder seems to see everything ok but it estimates the dvd to be over 4.7 gb (like 5.02GB or so, on the disk it is like 1.4GB or something). This is on a 1 hour 40 something minute tape. It also complains that the video bitrate is not right at 3000000. (note- when it says preview play, it plays so will this play on the dvd?)

Should I change my settings in TMPGEnc? Are these correct for converting to DVD? Will Roxio 6 burn the .mpg file ok that will play in the player?

    Thanks for the help!

  2. Does your DVD player support reading burned DVD discs?

  3. I think it does?? It plays svcd's and such...

Why the difference of trying to burn via EZ cd and Nero?

    Are my video settings ok?

  4. Change the audio rate to 48Khz for DVD ... 44.1Khz is for cd audio or S/VCD.

your bitrate for video 1150 is very low.....some standalones have problems with DVD's if the bitrate falls below 2000kbps. 1150 is VCD standard...

If you are going to use 1150kbps and 44.1khz audio you may as well just save the money and burn a VCD or SVCD.

  5. i wouldn't think it was even worth converting to 720 x 480 video at 1150kbps. the picture is bad enough at 352 x 240!

try bumping up the bitrate to 2500kbps - at LEAST - and change the audio to 48khz, and your disc should play.. don't expect that good a quality though as 2500kbps is rather low even for a DVD video stream.

as a rule try not to put more than 120-150 minutes on a DVD to get the best possible bitrate and picture quality.

  6. Ok.. I will try these out.. Just need to figure out how to do it..

Does it usually take like 25 hours to convert with TMPGEnc or am I doing something wrong?

    Thanks again for the pointers!

  7. Now all the avi files I created will not open in TMPGEnc? Says cannot open or unsupported?

I downloaded Gspot and it says compatible codecs installed? Rendering successful..

    Back at square one...

THESE ARE NOT DVD SPEC! Try anything above 2000k (somewhere between 4000k and 8000k is best) as well as 48hz 192k-224k audio.

There's something missing here, I think. How are you compiling the .mpg files into DVD format (i.e. .vob files)? Burning .mpg files straight to DVD won't work, I believe....

  11. It looks like I did miss out a step or two...

I do have an .mpg file, I was trying to burn that to play on my dvd.

    I need to ???

So capture using advc 100 and premiere = .avi file

Use TMPGEnc to convert to .mpg... Now??

you need to put that mpg into an authoring program like DVD Lab, Maestro, ReelDVD, TMPGenc Author, etc. etc. and author the dvd.

the authoring program will output a set of dvd files, which you can then burn to a disc and watch on your dvd player.
