Which program should i use to make menus? I used Nero to make them, but when I put the VCD in the dvd player, the menu came up and that's all that came up. The pointer didn't move and the rest of the VCD didn't play (it was just stuck on the menu screen) Do i need to make a SVCD or can i use just VCD, and can i put background music to go along with the menu screen? And one more question, somebody said that they had a 99 min. CD-R, can. I get that anywhere because I only see the 80 mins. CD-R. THANX!!!!!

It sounds like your menu's are working properly...
Push one of the number buttons on your remote.
The menus on VCD's don't work like they do on Regular DVD's.
By pressing a number it plays that item.
A little user-mean, but it works.

I encounter the same problem when I load my "finished burning CD-R" into my VCD player, BUT then I figure out that by putting the PBC to "OFF", then it will play the movie automatically.
Hope it helps to solve your problem. -
If you turn pbc off your essentially just turning off the menu, it will only play the movies on the disc and no stills or menu's. So if your going to do this you might as well just disable the menus and it should work properly everytime.

I am having the identical problem with menus. The menu is all I get whether I bring the VCD up in WinDVD or on another computer with VCD player that came with my ATI card. Nothing that I've tried so far has gotten beyond the menu screen. Since I don't have a "remote" with these, the suggestions above don't work. By the way, for a newbie, what is the pbc that was mentioned for turning off?
-
I believe that PBC stands for Play Back Control which is basically just allowing you to view still images and menus and supports using the # keys on your remote to select the corresponding clip. I'm pretty sure that only vcd 2.0 compliant cd's support pbc. Also my nero menus don't work correctly in my dvd player so I switched to Win on cd 3.8 and use the extended editor and now I can make menus and sub menus and everything works when I play it on my stand alone.

It is my understanding that for Menus to work on a DVD player (standalone ) PBC must be turned on. Otherwise, it eill skip the Menu page and just play the clips sequentially.
Unless you have a sophisticated authoring package, which Idon't, you willnot see or be able to be interactive like a DVD. You have to use the numeric buttons on the remote control.
WINONCD 3.8 Power is the best for making Menu driven VCDs. -
As far as I know, movies won't autoplay from the menu. I think that's why people make menus, so they can choose what to play. I've used the tutorial off of here and nero to make my menus and all i have to do is hit the number of the menu item that I want to play.

when i decided to play around with menus i found out, that none of my dvd-software is able to handle my menus, but on my friend's standalone-dvd they work. the only negative is that when using menu the player doesn't remember where it stopped. my conclusion was that for burning music-videos menus are quite fine, but not for movies. -
Once you've seen a properly authored (with menus) VCDs (movies or otherwise), you never want to go back...
VideoPack4 is a good proggy.
VCDImager can do more than the above and is free! (but no GUI as yet).
