  1. I have read reports that the new 1GHz emac superdrive (or at least some of them) are shipping with the sony drive. This was also true of the imac 17in with superdrive. Have any owners of the 17in iMac with sony superdrive or new emac with sony superdrive been successful in burning DVD +R/+RW? If they are unsuccessful in the finder/iDVD are they able to burn with toast?

The drive model number is the DW-U10a that is suppose to be identical to the DRU-500a except for firmware. The apple version of the DW-U10a seems to have its own firmware of A13b. I am not sure if this firmware prevents the drive from burning +R/+RW DVD's?

Thanks to anyone who has any info on this......

To the best of my knowledge dvd+r is not supported with iApps. A dvd+r/w drive may or may not be recognized by the OS. If it is, a third party software like toast will be the only way it will work!

It would seem odd to me for apple to put +r/w drives, but who knows what they are thinking.

The sony drive is supposed to support + and - r
The pioneer 106 is also supposed to use both formats also
(goto www.xlr8yourmac.com look into the cd\dvd faqs they have sony updated driver if you want o use a 500a in os X not everyone needs it but some do)

I have the sony 500a inside of my g4 400mhz tower and it burns dvd +r and -r just fine however I cannot make a backup of the disks that are + r for some reason I think it might be an OS issue.

I can mount the + r disks in OS 9 with no problem but I cannot make a disk image. (all my - r's work wonderfully)

When I boot into os X 10.2.5 I cannot mount the + r's at all but I can burn +r disks from images on my comptuter. But I cannot make a copy of a disk that I have burned using toast.

I backup my games and movies and the lesson I have learned is to use - r for my own personal backups I have a friend that has the external sony on his pc and he has no problems dupilication my + r backups so I am going to get him to switch them to - r for me

    I am using verbatim + r disks

I thought that it might be a reflectivity issue but since my friend can burn them with no problem I think its the dvd driver or os issue

Are you burning in the Finder/Disk Copy or is this using toast? Have you tried burning a DVD+R with iDVD3?

    I am using toast

    In OS 9 DVD+R

When I try to backup my DVD games the will mount but not copy using disk copy in Toast. My movies are not recognized using the dvd player but will still mount as a udf format dvd disk but are unplayable

  6. ps2daddy: Were you the one who posted this problem in XLR8yourmacs drive reports.....If not there is someone having the same problems as you if you want to have a read...

I can't help on the +R issue. If I get a sony Drive I will let you know how I go with +R burning and then reading....It must be something to do with +R not being supported on the mac...Have you tried different brands of +R discs? It mighten help but just though it might be worth ago...

  8. It must be a problem with the operating system not supporting it then, since you have tried at least 3 different brands and from your report on XLR8 yourmac a DRU-500AUL drive also on a powerbook....This is disconcerting....I and my relatives have DVD players that will not play the -R format, only the plus format.....I was hoping to be able to burn and read +R discs on the mac and distribute to the relatives. I guess I can still burn in +R format but won't be able to play them on the mac from what you say.

I wonder if this is true of the other +R/+RW drives on the mac...ie Ricoh, TDK etc...Or if it is just a problem with mac compatiblility with the Sony...I find this hard to believe though...

  9. I tested a DVD+R video disc on my iMac Slot loading (DVD-ROM) and it launched DVD player and played automatically...I was able to copy the VideoTS folder to the hard drive as well...

Although the disc wasn't burned on a PC DVD burner it was burned in Philips DVD standalone recorder. Maybe this makes a difference...?
