Suggested areas for improvement after 1st project

After just completing my 1st "AVI to DVD+R," I have a question regarding quality. The new DVD opens up & plays fine in my home DVD player, but there are frequent hesitations/momentary freezes in the video and occasional static in the audio. I extracted the audio with Virtualdub, converted the AVI with TMPGEnc (using the extracted wav file as my audio source), authored with ULead Movie Factory, and burned with ULead Movie Factory. Any suggestions to improve the quality of my next project? I notice that some users author with ULead & then burn with something else (like Nero). Why would they not just burn with ULead if they authored with it? Should I try this? By the way, the original AVI was downloaded from Kazaa and playes beautifully on my Windows media player (as does the converted MPEG2). I'm still a big NEWBIE, but I'm getting there. Thank You!!!

I guess what I'm hoping to find out is ... if the initial AVI and converted MPEG2 play fine (no video freezes & no audio static), then shouldn't the resulting DVD+R play fine as well? If so, then what did I do wrong? What should I do differently at which step? Thank you!

I am sure that my player is compatible with DVD+R (just bought it for that reason) and I have no label on my new DVD.

I agree with housepig. I think you should try the dvd on another player.
I recently bought a Pioneer dvd player that did the same thing your's is doing. Anyway I returned it and got a Sony with no problems.

You think so? I just bought the new Sony NS325 DVD player, because it states that it plays DVD+R. It has played all of my DVD-to-DVD+R projects just fine. This was my first AVI-to-DVD+R attempt & it was the 1st time that I have had any problems with playback. I figured I should be doing something differently in the whole conversion process.

Well it's not your DVD player. I also have a Sony NS 325 and it plays every dvd I've made so far. I have burned with Ulead DVD Worksop, Nero, RecordNow Max, and DVDdecrypter. Everything plays fine on the Sony.

I've never converted downloaded movies, so I don't know any problems accociated with them. Most of my DVDs are made from home movies and Authored with DVD Workshop or DVDlab.

To update, my problem is very consistent. I tried another AVI-to-DVD+R with a different downloaded movie last night and got the same reults: a great MPEG2 after conversion, but a very poor-quality DVD+R after burning (hesitating video & audio with static whether I play it in my DVD player or computer). I also did 3 more DVD-to-DVD+R burns with DVDX Copy and all 3 turned out beautifully as usual. So what is my problem with downloaded AVIs-to-DVD+Rs? I'm trying like mad to figure this out. Thank you!
