Problems playing dvd-r on progressive scan players?

I been backing up movies for about a month now with relatively few problems. I've tried the burned dvds on many different standalones and they have played on all of them, save two. What I noticed is that the two players that wouldn't play them are both progressive scan (Samsung and Panasonic). Is this just a conincidence or is there something to this? Has anyone else had this problem? Here is a list of what I am using to backup:

Nero (latest version)

I am in the market for a new DVD player and would like to know too if I might have more problems playing burned DVD-R/RW disks on a player with progressive scan compared to regular DVD player. Anybody?

I haven't had any problems so far on my Toshiba SD6200 player and it does have progressive scan. These backups have also played successfully on my neighbor's progressive scan player although I do not know the brand.

Programs Used:
DVD Decrypter or SmartRipper
DVD2One
RecordNow(packaged with the Sony DRU-500AX)


Discs Used:
Ritek 4X DVD-R
Maxell 2.4X DVD-R

That's strange. Toshiba is in DVD+RW camp and its players play DVD-R but do not play DVD+R! Weird, isn't it?

I've been able to play back DVD-R discs on a Panasonic RV-32 (non-progressive) and a Panasonic S35 (progressive) without any problems.

This includes DVD-R discs made in a variety of different ways ... including DVD Decrypter (ISO rip and ISO burn for single layer discs), using DVD2ONE (see below for more notes on this), and making my own DVD from different sources (DivX, Xvid, downloaded stuff, etc.) using two different authoring programs (SpruceUp and Ulead DVD MovieFactory 2).

The first time I used DVD2ONE I used NERO EXPRESS to burn the disc and it did play in both of the Panasonic models but not on an older Pioneer DVD player (non-progressive). I since have been following the DVD2ONE guide over at the doom 9 webiste and now they work in the Panasonic units and the Pioneer. Basically instead of using NERO EXPRESS I now create an image file using ImgTools (classic version) then burn the image using DVD Decrytper. This seems to make a more comatable disc since the Pioneer will play a DVD2ONE back-up this way but not when I used NERO EXPRESS.

I also have a CYBERHOME (model CH-DVD 500) DVD player and it is progressive but has no problem playing back DVD-R discs that I make in the computer ... however it will NOT play a DVD-R recorded and finalized on 3 different models of Panasonic stand alone DVD recorders that I've used. Yet it will play back DVD+RW discs made on a Philips stand alone DVD recorder. GO FIGURE THAT!

Toshiba makes a very popular DVD-ROM drive that can also read DVD-RAM discs and DVD-RAM is part of the -R camp. Other than Panasonic I'm not aware of anyone (other than Toshiba) making a DVD computer drive that can read DVD-RAM discs.

Also Toshiba makes a DVD-R/W computer burner.

Toshiba also makes a stand alone DVD recorder that, like the Panasonic units, records to DVD-R and DVD-RAM. This model has been out for a long time now and a new replacement model is due soon and is also a DVD-R and DVD-RAM unit.

In fact I'm not aware of Toshiba making a DVD+R/W burner.

So how are they in the DVD+RW camp as you say?

I am sorry, I checked the sources and you are correct: Toshiba is not part of DVD+RW alliance.

The other day I was trying out new dvd players at the store, using my nastiest princo dvd-r that HATES to be played on anything.

It played very well on the new Toshiba SD3900 progressive scan unit. Not to mention the very attractive price, under $100 US.

Thanks for the replies and info everyone. I'm wondering if Nero might be the problem. I burn all my discs using Nero in UDF 1.02 mode. I've heard on this site that such is the most compatible way to burn, but others have told me otherwise. Anyone have any thoughts.

Never use NERO ... pure and simple.
If you need to burn a DVD from a set of files (VIDEO_TS foler etc.) then use ImgTools (classic version) along with DVD Decrypter. There is a guide on the doom9 website on using this combo with DVD2ONE (which outputs a VIDEO_TS folder with files). Works great!

As for authoring programs I've used Ulead DVD Movie Factory 2 without a hitch. Works great if your source is an mpeg2 file with muxed audio.

FulciLives: I must be the voice of reason and Point out that I have NEVER had a problem with NERO, its all I've EVER burned with except for a short time when I tried Recordnow Max to see if it fixed a problem (it did not, there was a problem with the burner)

I won't weigh in on the Nero debate (I use Record Now) but I went to Best Buy and tried several of the new > $100 progressive scan players with my DVD-R and they all played just fine (including one the guy there said would NOT play). Samsung, Panasonic, Sony and another one that began with P (but not Pioneer -- I just can't think of it right now).

I purchased the Sony DVD/CD/MP3 (DVP-NS325) and haven’t had any problems playing DVD-R’s recorded via my VAIO DW-U12A DVD-R/W drive. I view all of my DVD’s via progressive mode (unless I end up with a non-progressive capable DVD) and so far all have played fine.

Why not use Nero? I have heard others say that but never really offer up a reason why.
