  2. I read about this earlier. I too just installed a version of Linux to learn me it. I want to get away from Microsoft, not Windows all together, just Microsoft.

I think this is just another way of Microsoft throwing its wallet around. I havent read much about SCO, but from what I read it has something to do with the code in almost all Linux OS's, and the company wants all vendors who have the code to hault. So Microsoft is just stepping in and buying a license to show everyone that they are willing to play fair.

I could be wrong though, so dont take my words to heart.

  3. From what I heard Gate's want to buy SCO then if SCO win the right to UNIX and LINUX they can do what ever they want with it

  4. There's one thing standing between Gate's and his insomnia due to Linux, his wish to make it MICROSOFT LINUX and it actually hapening: the US Supreme Court.

We all know Gate's has a Monopoly, the Supreme Court basically slapped him on the wrist with this using a sentance which consited of "You have to support advertising for your competitors and we're garnishing yur wages temprarily" I think that lasts until 2006 but could go longer, now if he Buy's Linux he'l beblatently violating his "agreement" not to meddle with other operating Systems, he will once again ahve a clear monopoly and the Judge sad that if this occurs the next senatnce will not be so light (Think of the original goal of DIssolving Microsoft) so I don't think Gartes' can touch Linux without shooting himself in the foot.

He wants the Unix souce coe, granted every OS except Windows runs off of Unix Source Code, well every OS in Use today, Linux Distros tat didn't pay Sun for Unix are just going to have to Pony-up the royalits and deal with it sadly enough, as for why Microsoft wants Unix so badly two words: Windows Longhorn.

Mac Os X with the help of Linux have just delt a major blow to Microsofts oversized Wallet, Apple has always knocked them around in the Video department but with Linux becoming more and ore popular Microsoft is loosing their Stronghold on Office Software and Servers, and naturally they want it back.

If anything Microsft wants access to the Unix source code like everyone else does for their new OS, They don't want to own Linux, they want to shut it down, they want to own Code to Unix, but not the Unix OS>

Is Linux in danger? Yes not by Microsoft but buy a suit for using soruce code without paying for the IP rights, this could be an expensive thing to fix but it'll probably be ironed out, especially with the Linux Influx in major buisnesses.

Microsoft is in Danger of Loosing their hold on Office and Server software, personally I'm getting Linux this summer due to the fact that I despise WIndows XP adn refuse to use any PC with it loaded, Windows ME was a MEss and even WIndows 95/98 the last half-decent M$ OS's were pretty bad and to be honest I've had enough with their "Upgrade every three years" Strategy which has given me headaches and wallet-brakes.

I'm going to be building a new PC, I'm running Windows ME as a Back-Up OS untilI can truly "Learn" Linux and then I'm going to try and get away from Microsoft Software, the only Microsoft thing I really want to keep around is the Intelimouse USB and maybe a few games although that Stupid XBox console has taken all of their decent PC/Mac games (Halo anyone?) and I have a GameCube.

If Microsoft ruins Linux they'll lose a customer although I would personaly like to see them dissolved before they overrrun the country with Microsof Eateries, I'm hapy to use some of their software as long as I ave alternatives available, I don't wnat Windows 3000 or whatever lame name the next Windows OS wil take and I don't want to pay double for WIndows when I've already paid for an Unopened copy of ME and and Linux will cost me half as much.

Microsoft can try and buy Linux, or Unix, but they're already inenough troube with Sun due to a Lawsuit for not carrying the Java VM, this is one suit Microsoft is going to lose, and when they do, I am going to be somewhat happy because I can't stand the bocthed VM I had to use after Microsoft took it out of Windows, I want Lniux via Redhat not Microsoft, I see they're already trying ot get intot he lving room wth Replay TV (Notice there's no DVD Playback ro recording because of who's making it) and I honestly wouldn't eb surprised if they're working on creating a stereo nxt, seriously they seem to own eerything now, and it's irking me.

But back to Linux, a few guys in the IT Departement at my Father's office in J&J and My Aunt who worked for AT&T as a Programmer, as well as my cousin who's an Astro-Physcist have all saidtat Microsoft won't be able to buy Linux due to all the negative press they'd recive as well as suits, don't worry you're safe from them for now at least, my concern is Windows getting UNix source code like Linux did and actually being useful to ther point where it'd cruch the competition legally.

I think there's a misunderstandng as to how what we call 'linux' is handled in the marketplace. 'Linux', or more specifically, the linux kernel, is released under the GPL. Similarly, most systems software in Linux distros are also licensed under the GPL or similarly free licensing, which hope to ensure that the software and source code remain free (as in speech). Please take the time to read what it's all about at the following links:

Linus Torvalds, AFAIK, owns the only real 'rights' and trademark to linux. Distributions like Redhat and Debian, etc, are also trademarked by their respective owners, so basically the only thing Microsoft can do is put out their own version of a linux distro, they can't control "what linux is" or determine its future. I don't know about you, but I don't know that a MS produced linux distro would go over very well in the close-knit, somewhat anti-Microsoft linux community.
