  1. I have read many guides and found that some guides contradict other guides. Also, some guides omit some steps, but for a newbie like myself it creates even more confusion. I really want to understand how things work, but I probably need some step-by-step instructions without any gaps. Here is what I want to do. I want to backup main movie only from a DVD disk on DVD-R and I want DVD-R to be playabale on a standalone DVD player.

I know how to rip the DVD contents to the hard drive using DVD Decrypter. But I don't want to keep everything. I only want the main movie from start till end, which is (let's assume) under 4Gig in size. DVD Decrypter showed me which VOB files are the main movie (VTS_01_1.VOB through VTS_01_5.VOB) So, what do I do next to make a DVD-R playable on a standalone player? I need at least one .IFO file, right? It is my understanding that VTS_01_0.IFO is the IFO file for the main movie, right? Is it enough to burn that IFO file (VTS_01_0.IFO) and five VOB files to the DVD-R disk? Do I need to add anything else? (In one guide I read that VIDEO_TS.IFO file is played first when a DVD disk is inserted in a standalone player. Does it mean that all burned disks must have VIDEO_TS.IFO?) Any other tips, siggestions, explanations? It feels like I am running in circles. Please help me!

    3 Easy steps

    1. rip main movie with DVDDecrypter
    2. send through DVD2ONE
    3. burn with Nero Express or RecordNow

DVDDecryptor will rip just the main movie if you select it(no extra's or extra language tracks or subtitles). I don't have it in front fo me to explain all the steps, but it has more than "Rip All" mode. You can rip the warning, the 'commercials' at the beginning, the sound tracks, alternate language tracks, pretty much anything that is seperteable.

If the movie only (with sound, which it will rip with the movie by default) is less than 4.3 GB(count the 1 GB VOB's), you can burn it. If it's bigger ( for DVD9's....the looooooonger movies), then you will have to re-encode it. There are numerous guides on re-encoding the DVD.

  5. I was hoping I can avoid using DVD2ONE (which compresses the video files) because my main movie is under 4Gig and it should fit on DVD-R without compressing. I just want to remove the menus, extras, etc, and burn the main movie which will be playable on a standalone player. I know what video files I want (VTS_01_1.VOB and VTS_01_5.VOB). What do I do next (and how?) to create a DVD-complient DVD-R disk?

If you only want to rip the main movie with DVDDecrypter, then open DVDDecrypter, click Edit, then click Select Main Movie Files and rip that to your hard drive.

If you dont want to use DVD2ONE because the file is already under 4GB then run each set of VOB's through IFO Edit.

What type of media are you using and what software are you burning with.

  9. Do I have to do anything with the IFO file? (Run it trough IFOEdit or some other software?) Is it absolutely necessary to include IFO file in VIDEO_TS directory for burning? (In my case, VTS_01_0.IFO should correspond to the five VOB files that contain the main movie, right? Should I just copy VTS_01_0.IFO and five VOB files into a separate VIDEO_TS directory and burn it? Will the new disk play in a standalone player?)

  10. > run each set of VOB's through IFO Edit.

Can you be more specific about why I need to run each VOB file trough IFOEdit and what should I expect out of it? How do I do it? I tried to read guides on IFOEdit, but I guess I am not at the point yet where I can fill the gaps myself. I need step-by-step instructions with a simple example (like in my case, I have a main movie title (five VOB files) ripped to my harddrive. The total size is under 4Gig. What do I do next to make a DVD out of these five VOB files?) Please help!

    1. Start IFOEdit
    2. Click on the Create IFO's button
    3. Open the first VTS_01_1.Vob
    4. Select Same As Source
    5. Click OK
    6. Do the same with the rest of your Vob's
    7. Select the complete folder with your Vob's and Ifo's and burn to DVD

  12. Ok, thanks. I'll try these steps tonight. Should I expect one IFO file or five IFO files (one for each VOB file) as the result of these steps? Also, does IFOEdit create IFO files automatically or do I need to choose a 'Save As' option from somewhere at some point?

I think it will be one for every set of Vob's and no you will not have to save as long as you check Same as Sorce it will do it automatically.

    GOOD LUCK

  14. Slick Rick,

It worked! Thank you, thank you, thank you! It is not difficult at all once you complete the procedure once from start until end. (But somebody needs to guide you the first time.)

All you have to do is use DVD x COpy Xpress - Buy it! It will automatically make and EXCELLENT COPY of ONLY the movie with just 2 clicks. Write/Transcode and Burn! I've done several perfect copies from 90 mins to over 2-1/2 hours and they are excellent. No matter what anyone says!

Now if you want to learn and spend a lot of time learning the ins and outs of DVD technology then use multiple dedicated programs that only do one particular step at a time and play with all the various settings and learn learn learn!.
No DVD can withstand the power of DVDShrink along with AnyDVD!

Well, actually for me to actualy understand this stuff is half (maybe even more!) the fun. I do want to learn Ins & Outs, so the first suggestion to buy DVDXCopy is not better than a suggestion to go to the store and buy another retail copy of the movie. I take it as a challenge and once I learn simple stuff I will move on to the more serious steps (like producing my own DVD movies from scrap). So, I really appreciate the time and effort people provide on this board. Thanks!
