I'm copying old Godzilla movies to DVD by means of a canopus ADVC 100 and creating an avi file, then since I only have Ulead MovieFactory I have to encode the avi into a mp2 file using TMPEnc for both the audio and video in one file. Was wondering if before I encoded the avi file with TMPEnc, I extracted the audio to a wav file and normalized the sound then had TMPEnc encode using the existing avi for the video and the new wav for the audio would work. Thank you for any help.

That will work. Alternately you can use BeSweet to make the MP2 file. Encode the video with TMPG, then MUX when finished.

Thank you. A quick question about BeSweet. I use it and Goldwave now for conversions. What my main audio problem is that the people's voices are relatively low in volume compared to the monster's fight scenes. I want to equal out that volume but am unfamiliar with either software as to what is the best way to normalize the sound. Any help is greatly appreciated.

normalizing sound will not make it sound better.
Better would be capturing at the correct audio level and leave the audio as it was. If you really want to normalize anyway, you should use CoolEdit or Goldwave, they have equalization filters who can help you reaching your target.
