Hello there everyone. Question for you all...I capture cartoons uncompressed using Virtual Dub capture with the HuffyUV codec in 720x480. I then convert to mpg using TMPGenc. I want to be able to watch these cartoons not only on my regular tv and computer monitor without seeing interlacing, but also on a HDTV in the future when I can afford one without seeing interlacing.
Right now when converting an uncompressed avi to mpg with TMPG, i use the deinterlacing filter in the advanced tab and it works fine. I am able to view the cartoons on my tv and on my monitor without seeing interlacing.
I recently experimented with inverse telecine and the results looked similar, except the encoding process took a little longer. The only difference I seen was on monitor playback when there was fast movement in the scene, a slight bit of interlacing would show. For one, does anyone know which deinterlacing filter is the best to use for animation (double, some form of double, or even-odd animation adaptation?), and should i be using inverse telecine rather than deinterlacing in the first place. I've been doing some reading but cannot find anywhere as to which I should be using, and I don't understand what the real purpose of inverse telecine is, but I read that it is a better form of deinterlacing. Thanks to anyone who can shed any light on this for me..

Hello
Well Inverse Telecine is usually for a 24fps film source that was converted to 30fps for video. The only time you can or should use Inverse Telecine is if you have a 3-2 pattern.
After you record to an avi file play that file (in VirtualDub or whatever you use) frame by frame. If you have 3 progressive frames followed by 2 interlaced frames in a repeating pattern then you can use Inverse Telecine and there should be NO need for any other form of deinterlacing.
So again, 3 progressive, 2 interlaced, 3 progressive, 2 interlaced, etc.
I don't deal with the issue much because I'm not really that much into animation and when I do record animation from TV I just leave it interlaced so as not to deal with the issue (I don't have a progressive display nor the budget for one anytime soon). I do know that a lot of people complain about animation not always being very consistant in regards to various deinterlacing methods as they tend to do "odd" things in terms of frame rate and interlacing that live-action video does not.

Thanks for the quick response! Well I just recorded some cartoons off of tv this morning, and I just checked out 4 or 5 of them with what you said. Most of them are 4 frames normal, and then 1 interlaced, so its 4:1. Sometimes during the faster motion scenes its 1 progressive, and 1 interlaced, every other one. I only found one small piece of one toon where it was going 3:2. It doesn't seem to stay constant throughout any of the cartoons, but usually its 4:1 throughout and 1:1 when theres fast motion. It's all been recorded in 29.97 fps.
Do you happen to know which of the deinterlacing filters I should be using? I've experimented with them all, and I also read that 'double' produces the smoothest results, but when I use even-odd I get a larger file size which is making me think its better. Any ideas? Thanks for the previous help! -
Hello
Sorry but I'm no expert in the rather difficult task of deinterlacing animation. All I can tell you is to NOT use Inverse Telecine unless you have a constant 3-2 pattern as I described before.
Since that is NOT the case with your files you cannot use the Inverse Telecine process.
The doom9 website has a couple of guides on IVTC and DEINTERLACING so I am sure you will find some pointers there.
Go to the doom9 website and "click" on GUIDES (left hand side) then "click" on DOCUMENT-OVERVIEW (near the bottom) and look in the OTHER STUFF area of documents. There you will find two documents about DECOMB as well as two documents regarding IVTC and DEINTERLACING.
GOOD LUCK!
