  1. I have AVI and the first 2 seconds it is tagged by some name, so i want to cut it out.

I use virtual dub but i will not cut it, it will cut only a large portion . Why wont it cut the small portion out.

i set the start frame then the end after 2 seconds, deleted the portion and tried saving , it just saves the whole video.

i set start frame after the to seconds, and then the end frame of the movie and it still saves the whole video.

i set start frame at the end of 2 seconds and then end frame half ways through the video and it will save half the video, (which is correct) but it still saves the beginning 2 seconds.

i set the start frame to 10minutes and the end frame 20mins and that works fine, it will save that portion,

Why wont it let u cut out a small part ?

Virtualdub makes cuts at key frames and the amount of frames between the key frames can vary depending on the video. Have you read the guide to editting with Vdub in the Edit section? You can move from key frame to key frame with the "key" buttons and then mark and cut. Alternatively, you can cut it anywhere you want after encoding.

Use the buttons that look like keys to find key frames, that's where Vdub will cut. If you make your mark after the key frame it will always revert back to the last key frame. The key frames can be several hundred frames apart, if you need to be more exact then cutting the mpeg is the only way to go. 8)

  5. Hi!

I have several DivX 5.2.1 AVI files which I need to split created using Dr. DivX with CBR. I am having the same problem as zero_net, I cannot get an accurate split because both VirtualDub and Nandub cut at the previous key frame, and this is unacceptable because the two key fames are 18 seconds apart.

zero_net's post was over two years ago. Is there any new solutions to this issue?

    Thanks very much,

    Niraj.

I had a similar problem with a very short AVI file, key frames too far apart, bad noise on about every 5 frames. I resaved it using the Indeo video 5.10 codec and specified a key frame every frame. Whether that is proper or the best method, it worked for me.

I was able to cut anywhere I wanted and resaved the whole edited version to XVID when I was done. The quality wasn't that great to start with, so I didn't really see any degradation when the project was completed. I just picked the Indeo codec as it was first on the list that would allow key frame settings.

    Any thoughts, guys?

  7. Thanks very much for your post redwudz, I'll give that a try and post back on quality loss (if any). I would have thought there might be a way to create new key frames in the DivX file using VirtualDub. I hope someone else can advise on its feasibility.

    Thanks.

There are settings for key frame interval within the DIVX codec under the 'Configure' settings, but I don't know enough about DIVX to make much use of them. I used the Cinepak and Indeo codecs as I thought they might not cause as much degradation as the DIVX codec with it's higher compression rates. You might take a look in the Doom9 forum as they seem to have more technical information there.

  9. Thanks again for your post. Doesn't look like anyone has an answer to this one, so I did what you did, from DivX to Indeo, then cut and back to DivX.

    All the best,

    Niraj.

  10. If you work in "Direct Stream Copy" mode you can only cut on key frames. If you work in any of the other modes you can cut anywhere you want but you will have to recompress the entire video.

You can use a mixture of the two:

    1) In direct stream copy mode, mark-in from the first keyframe after the 2 second segment you want to cut. Save everything from there to the end of the file.

    2) Switch to "Fast recompress" mode. Set the compression to the same codec, and similar settings as the original. Mark-in at the point you want, mark-out at the frame you marked in step 1. Save the short segment.

    3) Go back to Direct Stream Copy mode. Open the ouput from step 2. Append the ouput from step 1. Save.
