How to extract the video from a VOB to MPG?

I have a friend at work that owns a Philipps dvd+rw recorder.
So when I lend him a family tape the result is a dvd having a VIDEO_TS directory with several vob files in it.
I would like to demux de VOBs into MPG (m2v+mp2) files to import into my favorite video editing sw(to cut the movie into chapters and add menus to my dvd). Since the file is already in the proper mpeg2 DVD format I dont really want to reencode it, just extract it!

Here is the long-winded method I use now:

01Smartripper - to extract one big *.m2v file
02Dvd2avi - to extract audio track to wav
    03BeSweet - to convert the wav to a 192kbs mp2file
04TMPGEnc - to multiplex back to one mpg file
05Premiere - to cut the mpg file, edit, add chapters and author dvd
06Nero - to burn my family dvd

    Can anyone suggest something easier?
    thanks

It depends on how much editing you want to do. I have a Panasonic DVD recorder and do pretty much what you want to do. With the panasonic, which saves the captured video to hard drive, I can create multiple playlists. When the Panasonic burns a DVD, each playlist is put into a separate VOB.

I then use TMPGEnc DVD Author which will import VOBs and not reencode them when it burns a dvd. You have a choice of combining two or more vobs into one clip or letting single VOBs become separate clips. When you combine them, the combined VOBs become a new single VOB with each of the old VOBs becoming chapters.

For example I created a DVD with one long vacation plus three other short family events. The main menu shows the four choices. The vacation chioce takes the viewer to a chapter screen where the viewer can select different cities we visited. The other three choices on the main menu play the listed single brief events directly.

All of this is done without demuxing and produces the same high quality video that the panasonic does. TMPGEnc DVD author does not do complex editing like transitions, title overlays, etc. but it will trim clips, cut out sections and set chapter points.

Maybe this program will do what you want to do. You can download it for a 30 day free trial.

  3. There is a VirtualDub mod in the tools section that, I believe takes vobs and changes them into mpg2.

A couple of different ways. You can use the Merge & Cut tool in TMPGenc. You can also use the VOB Tools on the Doom9 site (www.doom9.org). They have a few that will join VOB files. The joined VOB file can then be demuxed into it's component M2V, and audio file. Of couse this would require single layer DVD rip. Dual layer won't fit on a single DVD. If you have a dual layer rip, then the easiest way is to use DVD2AVI, to re-encode to fit on a single CD, or just use the same VOB Tools method, splitting your big VOB into two smaller parts.

Going along with what DJ Rumpy mentioned,

VobEdit will demux them to m2v and assumabley ac3's. It can also be told to split the TS' on vob cell's. Get it at doom9.net

Also, if you can copy down the Video_TS directory, and it is unencrypted (or simply use SmartRipper in File mode to copy down the whole thing if it is encrypted), you could use dvd2one to re-size the video_ts dir and then burn it right back out if you don't need to edit or re-author anything.

I do this if I author up a disc, and it's a little big.....it takes only 20 minutes to resize the directory down to a single layer 4.7 gig....there's guides on the left.

You can also simply Demultiplex the Vob in TMPG under MpegTools, however I'd recommend VobEdit as it will span vob files and join them as it's demultiplexing.
