  1. Hello,
I am new to video recording somewhat, and have only made one video edited movie so far. I was wanting to do do something for my Dad for fathers day which is coming up:
He wants to get rid of his ancient (small) TV and SONY vcr that he has in his office, and just use a computer for video. He has a set of videos from a seminar that I was wanting to transfer to CDs for him.
I do not have a DVD burner, so was wondering what the best way to do this on regular CDs is? Should I use MPEG 2 or DIVX or something else? I'm mostly looking for a format that will preserve the VHS quality and fit the most possible minutes on a CD.
I will be using a Kworld USB 2.0 TV Box into a Toshiba 1.5GHz notebook, with 512mb ram for the video transfering.
    Thank you for any help!
    Sincerely,
    Jed Smith

Here is the web site comparison chart. I hope it helps, remember SVCD and DVD video are both MPEG-2 format.

  3. Thanks for the link, Tommy. After looking at that chart, does MPEG2 seem like the best choice? DivX would be cool for fitting lots on a CD, but then he'd have to always worry about having the DivX codec, right? I guess it's pretty popular, though, so maybe that would be worth a try...
Anyone have a resolution to use when capturing from VHS? I'd like to preserve what little quality there is, if possible.
    Thanks,
    Jed

Well, once you install it on "Pop's" system, you can forget it. Once it is there, you never have to worry about it again. And once you see how good a DivX capture is, I am sure it will suffice as a good substitute for VHS.
    Hello.
