  1. I have a $30 firewire card from compusa...compusa brand....it has 3 ports..I just got a new digital camcorder last weekend.

Can I use this to get my video from my camera to my computer if I use software to do it?

I want to make sure I can use one of those ports..or do I need a different card?

    Thanks,
    Scott

Yes, you can. I use Video Studio 6 to capture DV from my Sony camcorder to my firewire and vice versa.

  3. I bought that same card last 2 weeks ago and it came with a copy of Ulead VideoStudio 4. I was told by the sales clerk that not all of them have software packaged with the card. Seemed like an odd thing to say but I was lucky enough to get a Ulead CD.

Once I started to install the Ulead stuff, I found out that it would take up more than 550Mb of disk space! I canceled the install and logged into dvdrhelp.com and went to the tools section...

    <--- right over there!

and used the link to DVIO...

DVIO is a freeware package that has 2 advantages. 1st it is free! and 2nd it is less than a megabyte in size! It works great for downloading your miniDV tape to raw AVI files. Just be ready with approx. 14Gbytes of disk space for each hour of tape.

It worked great with the CompUSA firewire card and allowed me to get the AVI files and try them in other packages before actually trashing up my hard drive with old versions of Ulead stuff.

    Good Luck
