What gives? I bought a DRU500AX but it shows up a DRU500A in WindowsXP !!!
Is this a driver issue or a firmaware issue? Should it be an issue at all?

thanks in advance for any and all replies.

  2. Directly from the Sony Website

"The hardware is identical. The software that comes with the DRU500A and DRX500UL is on a CD-ROM disc and you will need to download the latest updates to the software from the Internet. The DRU500AX and DRX500ULX comes on a DVD-ROM disc and has all the latest software updates included. Both drives can be updated to the same, latest firmware."

    Hope this helps.

  3. Yeah...my DRX-500UL shows up as the DRU-500A on my computer. I've never had an external unit that did that (showed a different model # in device manager, etc.), so I called Sony Customer Service.

The CS Rep treated me like I was the biggest idiot in the world: "Of course it's showing as the 500A. It's the same thing as the 500A, it's just in an external box!" Of course, based on the rest of our conversation, it was obviously that she didn't know squat about computers, except for what Sony handed her in her script.

Just another example of how Sony Customer Service is the F***ing Antichrist.

(if you couldn't tell, Sony CS is a sore spot for me...)

  5. it's just a firmware upgrade thats it that make's the DRU500A or DRU500AX. I just want to say I had two DRU500AX and had toon's of problem's I can say this DRU500 can not burn Memorex or Khpermedia that well. So do not buy those brand's if you are going to stick with the DRU500. I went back to my PIONEER AO4 and it has no problem with those brand's

Checked in Nero, I'm running 2.0c firmware. I then threw in the software CD that came with the unit...it's all software, no firmware. Question, why sell it as a DRU500AX if you have to go and DOWNLOAD the "upgrade" firmware?

I guess the real question is...should I upgrade the firmware at all?
Maybe DRU500 users should start a POLL to see what's the most reliable, or most used firmware...just a thought .
thanks for all the help, folks.

  7. I use the 1.0f firmware with the DRX-500UL -- knock on wood, I've had no reason to upgrade.

From what I can tell from Sony, the only things different about the AX is that it had a new firmware that started w/ 2.0 (as opposed to the A's 1.0) and it came with software such as the Veritas DLA packet-writer bundled, instead of having to download it.
