  1. VIA Firewire? is this the best route for my old VHS tapes i wanna eventually put onto DVD? I've done a couple this way, and end up seeing a bunch of garble at the very bottom of the screen. Is this again an issue with DV capture? OR am i flat out missing something, as i've used 2 different apps to capture (M$ Movie Maker and VideoStudio 6/7)

    kthx

  2. That would just futher degrade the video quality IMO. For $40 or less just go to CompUSA and buy the program labeled "AVerDVD EZMaker" which comes with an AVer PCI capture card and the program NeoDVD Standard for capture, editing, authoring, and burning.

  3. I have done it with my dv vamcorder with no problem. I do not record to dv tape but I capture directley by using the DV camcorder as a pass through. Most of dv cam have that option. I do not know about the quality degradation, I do not see one. But I am not a pro.

  4. Sory I forgot to mention:

If the vhs tape are commercial and you are making a backup the articraft at the bottom may be due to macrovision. Although most newer dv would display "copy inhibit" and simply abort.

  5. I capture through camera no problem I did SW and it came out fine. But will have to write a script to get it better some time. If you have any rubbish at the top and bottom of picture why don't you just crop a few lines out?
Keep going till you get it right!!!

You can forget about any rubbish top and bottom lines, because they can't be seen due to overscan on a TV set. They are only annoying, when viewed on a PC monitor.

  7. I am trying to do the same thing mentioned here. I have a Canon Optura PI mini-dv camcorder. It connects via Firewire to my pc. What I want to do is connect my vhs vcr to the camcorder via the video and audio in, connect the camcorder to my pc via the firewire port. The only question I have is what mode do I put the camcorder in to pass through the signal. Obviously the vcr is put in play mode and normally you would record to a tape in the camcorder. That would get the video to a mini-dv tape in the camcorder. Then I could run the mini-dv tape and send it to the pc. There must be a method to just send the signal straight through the camcorder (which does the analog to digital conversion) to the pc without having to record it on the mini-dv tape first. Thanks for any help. I have an unopened AverDvd ready to install in the event I can't find a way to pass through the signal.

  8. there is no setting . you should hook the fire wire to your comp and the vcr to the cam and push play on the vcr and turn on the cam and it should pass through. if it does not then check your manual to be sure you have a/v in.

Don't know about Canon Optura but Canon ZR-10 (and many others) does not have pass thru. I have to first copy to miniDV tape and then capture tape output to PC via Firewire. Time consuming but works very well. No loss of quality or anything funny that I can tell.
