  1. First off, I haven't ripped a dvd. I came into possesion of these vob files through other means. I do not have a dvd burner so burning a dvd is not an option. I'd like to convert these to mpeg so I can burn to vcd and watch that way. Does anyone know of any free/share ware that can do this conversion? Any help is greatly appreciated

    drop vobs into tmpgenc

    select VCD template

    hit go

    burn

  3. It tells me it can't support the vob file when I try to drag_drop it into tmpgenc.

  4. Look to the left under DVD RIP, there are several guides on backing on DVD discs to VCDs.

  5. I have done that. But as I said before, I'm not ripping from a dvd. I have no dvd burner or player on my pc. I have vob files that I want to convert to mpeg or avi. I've read over stuff from the left. It describes many ways of ripping dvds to convert to vcd. Mabey those ripping programs do the vob->mpeg conversion when you rip. But again, I need a program that will work with vob files on the hard drive and convert them to mpeg or avi. VDub and TMPGEnc do not deal with vob files.

VOBedit will demux a vob into m2v video and audio streams. You can the use TMPGEnc to remux them to combined mpg, then burn in vcd format.

  7. Does VOBEdit take multiple VOBs and demux them into *one* .m2v and audio stream, or does it do them separately?

As the original poster, I also have VOB files I need to get back to elemental streams for reauthoring. But most of these have multiple VOB files for one movie (because of the 1gig limit) and I'd like to get them all into one .m2v file (and one AC3 stream, as that is the audio from the original)..

(My VOBs came from my Panasonic standalone that I used to record shows from the sat -- now I'd like to reauthor and put nice menus on them using my Sony burner).

  8. MusicLover,

If you're looking to convert to VCD (i.e. MPEG-1), you'll most likely need to convert the MPEG-2 VOBs to MPEG-1 .mpg's

Many of the freeware apps discussed on this site can do this:

    * TMPGEnc - but I think you need to install an MPEG-2 plugin for it to handle vobs directly (see tools section)

    * VirtualDub-MPEG2 - see tools section

    * DVD2AVI - popular way of doing it; create a .d2v project which TMPGEnc can open (again with a plugin) - DVD2AVI can also downmix/demux DVD audio formats to nice simple stereo for VCD.

    * FlaskMPEG - with the bbMpeg plugin that's included free in the Flask distributions, you can encode to MPEG-1 (VCD) or MPEG-2 (SVCD)

Nero or many other burning/authoring programs will burn a VCD for you once you've got a compliant MPEG-1 file.

    cheers,
    mcdruid.
