Hey, I encode video/audio using the normal quality setting in tmpeg. I always hear people bitching about how high quality and highest quality are the only way to go. The video seems to come out pretty damb good, plus its much faster to encode. So what is the standard?

I've used the settings "normal" and "highest" and it appears to me that when the source material is a DivX there's no difference between the two settings. When converting from a DVD the quality is much better when using "highest" instead of "normal". I use version beta 12i of TMPGEnc.
I haven't tried converting the same source material with both settings and compared the result. I base it on the fact that after converting many films using the "normal" setting, you "get used" to the output in terms of quality. When I converted DivXs using the "highest" setting I couldn't tell how the quality was affected. A DVD I converted didn't have the blockiness I usually see on shaded backgrounds so I figured the "highest" setting made a difference.
These assumptions are not solidly founded I realise that.
Most importantly if you find the quality acceptable or even impressive don't change a thing because someone else tells you to! Quality is a very personal thing. We're very fortunate in the "VCD scene" that there is lots of good software to choose from. So choose whatever suits your needs or whatever you like.

I do the same exact thing, but when i convert an AVI to SVCD using TMPEGenc It says that it's only a 30 day trial and that i have a certain amount of days left with it.. After the 30 days do i have to buy something so that I can continue using the SVCD feature?
Thanks.. -
no you dont have to, you just need to use better searching skills to find the "crack" around that.

I was just wondering if you could update it after the 30 days... i know i can find a crack for it.. anything is possible with the internet these days..

Quite by accident a new version of TMPGenc seems to appear every month.
There are other ways.......from my recollection if you create a new template, save it and open it you've got your 30 days back !
Or, just de-install, clean the registry of the unwanted leftovers and re-install.......dont forget to backup any templates you may wnat to keep.
