ATI user here who is still considering making the switch to Canopus ADVC-100. The biggest pain I am seeing now with my ATI is the constant struggle to get contrast and brightess settings right when I cap a VHS. I just wanted to know if this is an issue when using a canopus 100. Is there still a lot of post capping editing needed when using this box or is it ready to to be encoded straight off the cap?

    Thanks to all

    Heh,

I was just talking about this in a thread I put up.

It seems like I'm in a minority as for how my ADVC100 captures. 99% seem not to be having a problem. But I still like the box overall, no problem with out of sync audio, easy to use and set-up.

So if you get one, maybe it'll be better than mine...

Thanks GreyDeath. Looks like brightness and Color still seem to cause problems even with the Canopus. I'm just tired of making test DVDs all the time. Adjusting the levels can sometimes make it worse though. I find that on some tapes, contrast can be manipulated much more easily than brightness. Messing with the brightness can whitewash the hell out of your cap.

good luck with going back to your Radeon.

P.S...I dont like dark captures either.

So am I, my friend... so am I... :P

I find the Gamma correction in TMPGEnc to be better for adjusting the overall brightness of the video. You may want to fiddle with that...

Just when I think I got something figured out, I find something else that "may" be better. I guess it's a never ending pursuit...

I just made a capture using my Radeon, now I remember why I stopped using it... no matter how fast my computer is (an Athlon 2100) I still drop 1 frame--ONE! Most of the time the CPU usage in Virtual Dub is around 30%, something running's gotta be sucking away 100% for a microsecond...

I'm right with you man. Ever since I got into this whole vid capping thing, its been one frustration after another. I think its all about what ones personal preference is. I mean, I've followed one "experts" guide and have come out wiht crap. I've gone and done my own thing, and been very pleased with the results. If I can play the VHS, then play the DVD, switch back and forth , and find similar or better quality, then I am happy. Besides, can you or anyone else for that matter really notice 1, 10, or 100 dropped frames in a cap? I've always wondered what the big deal was. If anyone can enlighten me on the crappines or detectection of crapiness in a cap with dropped frames (whatever the number), please do. This is the noob in me talking. Please...go easy on the flames.
