I would have liked to put this topic someplace else but didn't think it fit anywhere

I bought music cd's from a large dept store. Hits of the 50's and 60's. Pretty cheap. less than $5 canadian each.

The discs are not remastered but contain all original artists and music which was probably put on CD from the old master tapes.

    Here's the problem.

When I play the music the sound on my home or car cd players is distorted and of inferior quality. Mixer adjustments meant to enhance the sound only distort it.Some songs sound thin with no rich bass and such.

    Now my problem:

I own a copy of the songs... right???

If I go on P2P or borrow from friends, I can find better quality copies of the same songs but probably remastered to current standards. These copies are far better than the one's I have. Would it be ok to get these and reproduce my CD's with the exact same songs but with much improved quality?

I also have a couple $4.88 DVD movies which have similar issues. I can get remastered versions of these also. Can I rightfully make a copy of the better quality DVD since I own the movie?

    What is your opinion?

Is this a legal issue? A moral issue? A non issue ? or Other?

This topic is open for discussion.

Don't know if this will be lost on the OT page.
There's not much to do but then I can't do much anyway.

I my opinion, a non-issue. Since you legally own the original, who's to say how good your copy, which you have a legal right to possess, has to be?
    Hello.

  3. this would constitute a little kid buying an edited version of a rap album on cassette but going home and downloading an explicit high quality version of the same album. i dont know it its legal but if you own a copy of it i guess it's alright.

  4. look at this scenario:

1995: you buy a CD release of an album that was released in the 70s. the CD has had little to no remastering done to it and sounds average.

2003: the same CD is re-released with a completely remastered mix taken from the original master tapes. it sounds fantastic.

do you have the right to download/copy this new version?

    no.

you paid for the original version. you didn't pay for the copyright to the songs. you paid for a hard copy of the songs - and you were happy to pay money for them no matter how average they sounded - and that's what you got.. so why should you be able to get these new improved versions for free?
