how to back up avi's with stand alone dvdr via tv-out

Is it possible to backup downloaded movies (avi's,divx ect) onto a dvdrw
(philips dvdr 880) Through TV-out, I Tried the obvious and the media player inner screen blacks-out When i hit the record button, I tried a few players, Windows,Zoom,PowerDVD,Alphaplayer.
(Also tried with a Mpeg movie as a test, same happened)
hope someone can help,

If not is there a single application that will encode avi to svcd from start to finish.........or is that too much to ask ??
