  1. i bought this dvd player at best buy for 52$ total, after reading very good reviews about it.

i've read in the reviews that it plays anything, dvd-r, mp3, svcd, dvd-rw, vcd.

but i read conflicting reviews that it does not play dvd-r, and it plays dvd-r.

i'm just trying to wait for my dvd burner to arrive by mail to find out if it does play dvd-r.

anyone know, for those who have this dvd player, the mintek 1600, that it does play dvd-r?

  3. I just bought the Mintek 1600 less than a month ago and I've been raving about it!

I bought it as a cheap secondary unit so I could have a DVD player in my home office. It takes whatever I throw at it (so far).

To answer your question: My 1600 has played DVD+R, -R and +RW (I don't own any -RW to test on it) with no problems. I have used Fuji, Verbatim, Ritek, BeAll, and DupEz discs (among others) and I burn my DVDs with a Sony DRX 500UL. No headaches yet.

But on top of that, it plays discs that skip on my main unit (a Toshiba 5-disc player) or cause it to freeze (the Toshiba doesn't seem to like DVD Complete authoring).

It also plays raw mpegs (you don't even need to author a VCD!) as well as VCDs and jpeg files.

My biggest joy with this unit is the fact that it plays DVD MP3s, which is supposedly hard to come by. Over 4 GB of MP3s on one disc (about 1250 songs)!! I do a lot of processor-heavy work sometimes on my computer, so it's not always feasible for me to run my software MP3 player at the same time. Instead I just turn on the TV, pop a DVD full of MP3s into the Mintek, hit shuffle, and go about my work. I f***in' LOVE it!

I've been recommending it to my friends, and I'm already considering buying another one to hook directly into the living room stereo system -- and at $50 a pop, if it dies in a year, it won't bother me as much (at least not financially -- on an emotionally level I'll be heartbroken!)

  4. I bought a total of four Mintek 1600 DVD players from BestBuy. I gave three of them to family as gifts so they could enjoy DVD movies. It's perfect for my mother since it doesn't have a digital display to confuse her, she thinks it's another VCR LOL.

Anyway yes the player will play any DVDR format. Interesting that it will play mp3's from a DVDR, I didn't know that.

  8. It one of the new standards that some companies support,Hewlett-Packard Company, Mitsubishi Chemical/Verbatim, Philips Electronics, Rioch, Sony, Thomson and Yamaha have announced that they are increasing support of the DVD+RW format. ...Home made
dvd made with DVD+R media are supposidly more compatiable with newer DVD players including Xbox and PS2
Currently, there are three DVD media formats fighting to become standard. The first is DVD-R/DVD-RW. These disks can play in stand alone DVD players however there have been many compatibility issues with them not working in all players. The largest DVD-R disk available is 4.7 GB. Before consumer DVD-R burners hit the market, DVD-RAM burners were available. DVD-RAM disks can not play in set top boxes,(don't bother) however you can get disks with up to 9.8 GB of storage. Lastly, many companies are supporting DVD+RW, the newest format. DVD+RW is said to be compatible with the most number of stand alone players
