I am running in to a strange problem.
Using DVDBackup 1.3, DTOX 1.0.1 and Toast Titanium 5.2 on a 17"iMac flat panel with a (slow) Superdrive (hitachi).
Tuesday, I tried to backup Jurassic park and DVDBackup did its thing. Got to DTOX and tried to do "disk copy". Got a message about an IFO error (I should have written it down), so I did movie only. DTOX does its thing. I opened Toast, inserted a blank and pulled the entire DVD file over to Toast (Title file with VIDEO_TS and AUDIO_TS inside). The file size showed up in Toast as 11 GB! (started with DVDBackup as 7.5GB). It was late, so I went to bed.
Next day, I ordered the new LaCie d2 DVD-RW (I was going to do this anthow). It showed up today and I plugged it in - it works, no problems. Looks like it will cut my backup time by 60% or so. Anyhow, I went through the process again with a different disk (Magnificent Seven). and got the same result. IFO error (didn't write it down again - I'll do it next time), pulled the file into Toast and the 7.5 GB file I started with is now 11.4 GB.
I am frustrated since I have backed up several DVDs with the Superdrive prior to this, using the same process I am describing here. (On the other hand, my new LaCie at least lets me be disappointed in 1 hour instead of 3 hours!!)
On the serious side, why am I getting the IFO error and why is the file GROWING instead of shrinking to fit the DVD? As you can tell from this ham-handed description, I am not a technophile, but this is pretty straightforward stuff. I can really use some insight here.

tgpo, DTOX is set to 4472 MB.
One of the things I have been doing is selecting all of the files in the left pane of DVDBackup with the mouse just before I hit "Process Files". I will try again without selecting all of the files (just drag the the mounted DVD to the left window).
Does DVDBackup have any settings in the menus? The preferences command is grayed out in the main DVDBackup menu.
I will also follow your guide, I may be doing something wrong. Do you have any other ideas?

You don't want to select all files in left column of DVD2oneX, you just want to select the movie file, usually the one with the most chapters.
It might say something like 24 chapters length in time 1:18 minutes. This would be the movie.
Once you have selected just one, go to right hand pane and select the Audio File (usually one that says AC_6).
From your description above, your process was essential copying the whole dvd, and not just the movie. Hence you had a file bigger than your blank DVD could burn.
Let me know how it turns out or if you need some more help.

Brian,
I think I am gaining on this problem.
The error I was getting was "Error adjusting the IFO file, it does not match the VOB file." Following your suggestion, I was able to get through DVDBackup and DVD2one. I ended up with a VIDEO_TS file that was compressed to the 4472mb size.
DVD20ne is a bit confusing with source file and destination file, but I worked through that as well. This is where I was getting the error message.
I created a folder with the name of the DVD and put the VIDEO_TS folder and an AUDIO_TS folder in the DVD folder. Opened Toast , slected "New DVD" and pulled the DVD folder into Toast. Hit "Record" and burned the DVD. Got a message saying the disc was verified and hit eject.
When I tried to play the disc on the MAC, DVDPlayer started up, I hit "Play" and got a message saying "NOT PERMITTED". I put the disc in my Denon 1600 DVD Player and got a message saying"This type of disc can't be played, please insert another disc".
I did a burn of the DVD on both the Apple Superdrive Hitachi) and my new LaCie (Pioneer DVR-105, Revision Level 1.30) and got the same results mentioned above both times.
I have used DVDBackup, DVD2one X and Toast on the hitachi to backup a couple of DVDs prior to all of this with no problem. I bought what I thought was the same media, but in checking, it looks as though I ordered something different this time.
Since I have been able to get all the way through the burning process, with all of the above in mind, I am thinking that the new discs I got are the problem, so I am off to the store to get some Imation discs - I know that they also work.
Does this make sense or am I still missing something in this process?

It might well be disc.
I usually use Apples DVD-r media 2X.
I know on my mac G4 it works with Imitation DVD-R, but only will burn at 1x speed, due to Apple's Superdrive update.
I will mention I made mistake of buying DVD+R media notice it's + not -
Apples Superdrive WON'T work with DVD+R media.
Let me know, how it goes.

Just tried to burn to an Imation DVD-R which I had done successfully before. Same problem - NOT PERMITTED.
I don't know what to do next. I am perplexed and frustrated. This shouldn't be this hard. -

Just a thought . Try backing up a dvd again you previously did successfully.
If it works, maybe the dvd your trying now has some sort of protection making it impossible to do. Is it a movie? Newer movie? Does disc have multiple episodes on it?
Some thoughts and ideas-
With your dvd player on computer, can you open the video file dvdonex created and play it?
It seems to me your doing everything correctly.
Have you upgraded any software or changed computer settings since your last successfull backup?
Are you burning the same image in toast you created earlier when it was not working? Maybe go through the whole process again, from a fresh start.
I know it's frustrating, but it will probably be something simple. That seems always to be my luck.
Keep me informed of your findings.

Brian,
I went through the entire process again after assembling all the info I could find on DVDBackup, DVD2oneX and Toast from several sources. Your note to select the chapter heavy piece is also included.
I noticed that the 2 discs I was trying to backup were pretty scratched up so I pulled a new/clean disc off the shelf. I used my assembled notes and went through the process using an Apple DVD-R and it worked.
Now the issue is bolied down to 1) having all of the detailed steps, 2) a scratched up original disc or 3)good media. I suspect the order is as I have listed it.
More testing over the next couple of days.
I have also sent you a PM.
