  1. Is there any way to know what to set this field to? I have always used "bottem field first". But up to now all my videos have been from a digital camera. I am know doing some DVD conversions that is turning my non-anamorphic DVD's to anamorphic DVD's. How do I know if I need to change this setting?

    Thanks for any help.

There is a program called restream.exe that will change the field order and some other settings in mpeg and VOB files. If you run that program and open the files from your original DVDs, restream will show you what the current settings are. You should then use the same setting when reencoding.

I think that dvds are generally top field first but I am not sure about that. I took some video from dvds and reauthored to create a new dvd. Somehow the authoring program produced files that were bottom field first from the original files which were TFF. The resulting video was very jittery, especially with panning. Reencoding with TMPGEnc set for TFF produced jitter free video.

    I hope this helps.

    This is a wonderful site:
And is well worth a read.

I understand "Top Field First (A)" is for an analogue source and "Bottom Field First (B)" is for a digital source, but suggest you read the guide, it helped me a lot
TMPGEnc is wonderful and should correctly guess the field order when you import your avi but on an odd occasion I've found it get#s it wrong

  4. I downloaded that restream program and it gives a lot of good information thanks for the reply. I had another question though. I am working on my Goodfellas DVD and there are two sides to the DVD. On side one VTS_01_1 - 4.VOB the field A is not checked so I guess this means I need to use field B to encode this. On the second side VTS_01_1.VOB does not have field A checked but 2-4 do. What does this mean if 3 of the 4 VOB's have this field checked. Should I just go off the VTS_01_1.VOB and use field B or use field A because of the other VOB's.

    Again thanks for any help.

DVD's are usually top field first. You can usually use Top Field First for all DVD rips, including any individual VOB's, assuming the material being encoded has the VOB's fed in as one stream, rather than as individual VOB mpeg's. All Cam sources will be bottom field first. If you crop a video, you may inadvertantly change the field order. Make sure you always crop in even numbers, or be aware of the field order after cropping if you cropped using an odd number.

On a side note, you can also use Pulldown.exe, and the Pulldown GUI to change the field order on an encoded MPEG. It's a bit easier than restream. Search GOOGLE for "PullDownBatchFE.EXE". You will need pulldown.exe to work with this gui.
