  1. I used vcdeasy, but wan't too crzay about the quality...the resulting vcd or svcd mpegs doesn't look as good as the jpeg images shown by internet explorer. WHich program creates high quality images that can be burned on vcd or svcd?

  2. I use Ulead DVD Picture Show 2 to make my picture VCD's. The program is extremely simple and you can add background audio and make menus. The JPEG quality is preserved unless you add transitions and text.

Note: If you add titles or transitions then the program will have to render the JPEG's to VCD format which will reduce the origonal JPEG resolution and quality. I believe this is true for all picture to VCD softwares.

I also use both Ulead's DVD Picture Show and VCDEasy. It seems to me that VCDeasy makes better MPEG stills (resolution set to high). To verify this I checked the file size of MPEG stills produced by DVD PS and VCDEasy. Result, MPEG still by VCDEasy is larger in file size. Does this means a higher quality MPEG stills?

However I like the simplicity of DVD PS, it's very easy to use. Is there a way to tweak the settings (in the registry), e.g. adjust the resolution like that of VCDEasy?

  5. As I understand it, these programs support jpeg resolutions of 704x480 and 704x576 maximum, but the vast majority of my jpegs have larger resolutions, sometimes 4 digit resolutions. To clarify my original question, are there any programs that support higher resolutions?

Is it possible to simply copy the jpegs onto a cdr without having to make a slideshow?

    Thanks

I may be mistaken, but I beleive that is what the "kodak feature" of some dvd players is.

It is unfortunate that we have to turn the jpegs into a mpeg to view pics.

  7. Many of the new DVD players coming out can play unformated JPEGS from a CD-R (EX: Sony SLV 300P). Im not sure if they convert the Res to 704x480.
But 704x480 is good enough for most interlaced TV's.

If you want music or effects then you will need to make the slideshow.

Mocha, you are asking the WRONG QUESTION.

You cannot make a VCD with JPEG stills.

VCDs only support MPEG STILLS and of all the VCD authoring programs, the ones that VCDEasy makes are probably of the highest quality. The resolution is irrelevant as MPEG stills on a VCD have a maximum resolution of 704x480/576. This is near the maximum resolution that your TV can display.

As for JPEG IMAGESs, you can just burn these on a CD-ROM with your regular burning proggy. SOME DVD players can play JPEGs straight off a disc but not the majority.

I get best quality using my own still-creator (internal tool of VCDwizard, see link below) - and I can create a STILL from either BMP - JPG - GIF - TGA and/or PPM.
But I get best quality when my image is in the PPM (binary) format.

For VCD, MPeG-1 still's are created. For SVCD, MPeG-2 still's.

For very good quality photo cd's, use Movie Maker 2 to render, and then use TMPGEnc to encode to VCD. Simple, excellent quality, free...
