actually, i think what i should be asking is: should i encode in constant bitrate at my dvd player's peak bitrate or use vbr?

If your DVD player's peak bitrate is the average bitrate you calculated, encode CBR.
Else use VBR and set max to the max(-30kbits or something) your dvd player can handle and the min to 0.

I just got done encoding a movie with 2 pass VBR, the settings were 4500 max 2500 avg. and 1150 min. and the movie looks like crap to me it is a XSVCD. The avi. I used was very close to DVD quality I couldn't tell the differents between them. I would say use CBR I think it looks better but if you are trying to save space use the VBR.

You say your AVI was DVD quaility but was it a ripped DVD or a DivX file? Did you set motion search to high (the default is fastest IIRC)? Do you turn detect scence changes off? Can your DVD player support 4500kbit/s?! Go above the max bitrate and 'odd stuff' starts happening (skips, pauses, dithering, etc).
If 2500kbit/s is your DVD max, then just use CBR.
Aside - I make DVD rips -> xSVCD w/ CCE 3pass VBR min=900, ave=1600~2000, max=2500 all the time and they are DVD quaility encodes (2-3 discs thou)

I didn't make the .avi(Divx) myself but it looks perfect. My DVD player can handle 4500kbits/s it usually looks great with CBR but I used VBR this time to fit it on 3 cds. I didn't play it on my DVD player yet but it looks like crap on my computer. I didn't turn detect scence change off I left it on. I use 4500kbit/s as often as posible. I also used 3:2 pull down and non-interlaced, the movie is NTSC Film. I put the motion search to highest quality. Am I doing something wrong?
