I've seen on here quite a few posts about DVD disks going bad after 6 months, 1 year, or whatever. I use Ritek 4X DVD-R and Ritek 2.4X DVD+R disks.......has anyone experienced bad disk after a period of time? The reason why i'm asking is because I put a lot of movies, pictures of my family, and other memorable things that I don't want to lose after time. I want the disk to last over 50 years like all the companies say that DVD disks should last over 100 years. Has anyone had problems with Ritek disks going bad or losing the information?

If you have experienced bad disks.........what brand were they so people on this board can stay away from them.

  2. No failures yet.

Most of us have not been at it for over a year so who can say they will not fail in 3-5 years??
Also the dyes used are constantly being improved.

I think the trick will be to xfer the important ones (family videos) every time a new format comes out. when I get my blu-ray burner in a few years, I will put my priceless dvds on one of those.

make the issue redundant - keep a copy on DVD, the next format etc. I even keep disc images and raw MPEG2 files of really important stuff on my HD. I can't tell you how wonderful it is when something goes wrong and I have the files on my HD, hidden away somewhere.

also - for dvd backups I tend to use the cheaper bulk stuff (ritek etc) but for home movies I spend the extra few bucks on better discs like Apple, TDK, Fuji etc...

That's probably what I'll do. Put ONLY backup DVD movies on my Ritek disks and put my important things on Fuji, Verbatim, or Sony DVDs.

How can you tell if it's good dye or if the dye had been improved?
