If you want quality then VCD might not be your best choice. I only use VCD when my source tape is SO bad that it would be a waste to use anything higher.

SVCD would eliminate a de-interlacing step (depending on capture method). I agree with K2. Check the guides first. The methods used for this are many and varied, making it impossible to answer your questions.

Besides, it's a slight breach of protocol to ask such an involved question without making any effort to research the information that is already here. I don't say that as flame... just as a helpful tip. You'll find the people on this board friendly and eager to help, provided you've shown evidence that you're willing to help yourself. This is the most newbie-friendly forum I've ever seen... and I should know... I'm barely out of my training pants myself!

Research the guides and when/if you need advice or clarification on a specific question you'll be surprised at the response you'll get from this board. We're not refusing to answer because you haven't looked for yourself. Honestly. Once you read the guides you'll realize that the questions you've asked are too vague to really answer effectively.

A comparable question would be "The road I'm driving on forks into five different directions... which one should I take?"

Some pointers to get you started... check out your DVD player. Will it play VCD, SVCD? If yes/no... research the guides and software... there are some hardware reviews as well... capture devices, DVD players and whatnot. Focus on your "final goal" (eventual DVD conversion?) and plan according to that. Also... quality is subjective and gets argued on here all the time. You'll be told over and over to make some discs and decide for yourself... it really IS the only way to do it.

    Welcome to the board!
