  1. I'm a TOTAL newbie, and trying to get my head around this.

    Is this right:

    1. use DVDdecrypter to rip the DVD (to VOB files?),
    2. use Headache to encode the sound from the Vob files (at 48KHz?),
    3. use TMPeg to encode the video from the Vob files (to MPEG2?),
    4. use ddMPEG to mux the resulting audio and video files to one file, and
5 . use Nero to burn the SVCD (non standard compliant mode?).

  2. Or you could download Eazy Vcd from the tools menu and that will do the lot for you.

  3. You can also use DVDx 2.1 (Latest Version) (DVDxCopy) its able to re-encode dvds to vcd, svcd and even avi. A very simple programme to use for newbies, and worth checking out, just look in the tools section and im sure you'll find a link there.

The guide is also available in guides section, hope that helps.

  4. Yes, I already saw EasyVCD and DVDx (v.2.2, I think) on several download pages.

From what I understood by reading thru the forums here and elsewhere is that using individual programs (doing things "by hand") gets a better result?

  5. Actually it's called bbMPEG, not ddMPEG

You should probably check out the guides some more, or maybe get DVD2SVCD at www.dvd2svcd.org.

I prefer to use VCDEasy to master/author the SVCD then burn it, rather than using Nero. My DVD player has a "time search" function (as in, I want to go to minute 15, I type in 1-5-0-0) and SVCD's burned with nero (for some reason) lose this capability.

Also I prefer to do things manually, because (in my opinion) DVDx 2.2 (or 2.2a or whatever the latest version is) is very slow...and you can't turn the previews off (grr) which would probably speed up encoding immensely.
