I noticed that Best Buy in our area (Richmond, Va) had no more DVD-R's. I asked the salesperson and they stated that Best Buy will not be stocking DVD-R's anymore. Their reasoning is that DVD+R's have taken over. I also noticed that their website is not supporting DVD-R's anymore. Has anyone else seen this?????

heh, you missed April fools by over a month...
Best Buy is still carrying dvd-r's
and if you go to the website, you can see tons of dvd-r, -rw's, +r, and +rw
here's one, and there are tons of others:

No Joke!! My local Best Buy (Lincoln, NE) only had one brand of -R's, and said that they were no longer ordering DVD-R's. They gave me the same "+R's are #1" bullshit.
It looks like their online store still carries them, but I won't be able to go into the store to pick them up much longer. No big deal!! You can find them much cheaper on Ebay anyway! -
I tried your link and half your order is not available!
I think they are letting their stock on anything else to run out.
The only thing I am worrying about is that a large retailer is so misinformed. Plus it was nice that I could get Taiyo-Yuden, local. I also think part of their move is because M$ has adopted DVD+R/RW's as the medium of choice. I guess another flunky has joined the M$ dungeon...... -
well another large corporation is properly informed (albeit evil) - CompUSA.
they have begun stocking spindles of DVD-R and I keep seeing less and less +Rs.
i'm wherever the cheapest media is + or - R, but it has been and is now, -R.
CompUSA - a mind is a terrible thing to waste. but if it is too late, work for us. -
Best Buy has got some of the most in-ept employees working there for minimum wage. They spew out some of the dumbest things you'll ever hear, just like the smart one who told you Best Buy will no longer sell DVD-Rs. Or like the guy who told me that my Sony DRU500A CANNNOT burn at 4x on DVD-R. So I played along, and said why not. He said because its old technology, the +R is better and more compatible cause its newer and thats why its got the +. Its like the next generation for DVD recording. Then I told him that he was wrong. He didn't believe me. He asked his friend, who agreed with his friend that I was the one who was wrong.
So I realized I wasn't gonna get anywhere with these BB saleguys. So I told them to check on the specs for the drive themselves on the Internet, they did and eureka. "WOW, I can't believe it. I thought the +R was the fastest and that the -R needed the firmware upgrade to be able to burn at 4x." This was just one time, there have been alot of other times when I went there and they just had no idea what the heck they were talking about. They were just talking out their butt, so it looks like they knew something.
Its actually just the opposite, the Best Buy near me is always low on stock of DVD-Rs, why? Its probably better and definitely cheaper to purchase and they are sold out as fast as ppl can get there hands on them. If you want the truth, write a nice letter to the head of management in your regional area and ask why their saleperson told you that? It would be nice to see what they say. -

On topic,
I've noticed that the big retailers are only carrying +R writers now and the only way to get -R is to buy a Sony 500 series writer or the hard to find Pioneer A05.
EDIT:I see You_Are_Alive beat me to the BB punch. We must have shopped in the same store. -
Best Buy is not only not a "best buy" on most products these days, but they tend to carry a lot of crap, and have quit selling high-quality items. I can no longer find SVHS or DVD units on par to what I bought there some years ago. Same for most things in general. And as stated, full of inept high school and college students working there to get discounts on all the cool gadgets and games. That store has really gone down the tubes in the past 5-6 years.
If you ask a Best Buy employee for advice, you might as well drive down the street and ask a bumb the same thing. At least the bumb would be honest and say "WTF are you talking about?" rather than spout half-wit nonsense.
DVD-R replaced by DVD+R? Yeah, as stated, April Fool's was last month, and I don't think there's a BS day. Nice try guy. Maybe next time. I hear some eskimos in Alaska are looking for some ice, too. And they've figured out a way to make CD players actually play DVDs.I'm not online anymore. Ask BALDRICK, LORDSMURF or SATSTORM for help. PM's are ignored. -

and I don't break them for no one! -
My local BestBuy seles every DVD-R out the day they come in so I doubt they are going to drop an item that sales that good.
-
I agree with most of the replies here..........Best Buy employees are not the best place to ask for information about their products. There may be a "few" employees who do know what they are talking about, but i'd say 95% of them have no clue.

I don't know much about the quality of employees at Best Buy. My hometown only has a Walmart and a Kmart, BUT, I did notice that the walmart has started selling Memorex dvd-r and +r discs. They also had a TDK +r burner a couple weeks ago.
I've yet to buy any type a dvd burner/recorder. Once the discs become cheaper, I'll get one. By then, maybe one type of format will be the clear winner. -
well I guess the -R people are all up in arms cause +R is just as popular and now that have to cry, big deal!, if you had bought a sony DVD burner who gives a crap but I believe its all the pioneer A04 and A05 ownwers out there crying, should be anyway pioneer crap, plus Sams club price on verbatuims 30 pack for $49 beats any name brand out there thats COMPusa sells and I don't mean their own cheap brand either, I do believe its stupid that a major store like best buy is only carrying one format thats just or slighlty more popular than the +R format, but then again Beta was better Than Crap VHS and look where that got them.
I still have no problems with my +R's that I burn with my HP, so I don't worry about +R's anyway, except that I do use those cheap Merritline or riteks in my panasonics DVD recorders, though a heck of a lot less now that I have a +R burner, and My +R's play in any DVD player, while I have had problems with some DVD players with my -R's recorded in the panasonics. -
My friend is a manager at Best Buy. The people are not picked for their technical competence, they are picked for passing a 'theft screening' test, as well as not being repulsive. They are also paid less than someone at McDonalds.....think about it.
Also to Note in Ohio. Plenty of +R and -R, theya re going to stock whatever sells. They are NOT stocking anymore 1x -R's. My locla BB is usually out of -R's, they don't stock that many. The Office Max across the street has plenty of both (list prices). To Be, Or, Not To Be, That, Is The Gazorgan Plan -
My local BB stopped carrying DVD-Rs about 6 months ago. I actually drove down there to pick up some Verbatims, only to find that "we are going with the winner - DVD+Rs". I told him that his purchasing people should actually read the industry sales data - DVD-R units were out-selling the +R by a 2 to 1 to 3 to 1 ratio - not much of a "winner" by my standards. I haven't been back since.
There website does show the Verbatim DVD-Rs for $29.99 for 15, but the site gives you a "Not available for delivery at this time. Not available for store pickup". I won't be buying from their website any time soon, either.
I called the local BB this week to see if they had possibly seen the error of their ways and asked if they had any DVD-Rs in stock, and was told that they only stocked +Rs. -
actually the real reason best buy is not carrying both formats is because they have stupid salespeople and uniformed customers, example my brother bought from them a panasonic HR-2, uses Ram discs and DVD-R, what do they sell him but a 50 pack of DVD+R Verbatuims and being his 1st experience on DVD asked them if those where the proper DVDR's for his machine and oh course the salesperson said yes, well he opened them and of course they did not work and had to return them, have you ever noticed how many packs of opened DVD+R's or -R's they have at their stores, so they figure if they only sell +R burners and the +R blanks their stupid sells people can't get it wrong, I have no idea what they will tell someone when they buy a DVD recorder, unless they phase out the panasonics and only carry +R recorders by philips, APEX, Samsung, Orion and Sony. I believe it has nothing to do with who sells more or what will make them more money, its to keep the confusion down, now why they went with +R over -R, eh who knows, maybe better kick backs or deals from the +R camp.
-
Who cares if Best Buy carries DVD-R discs when you can buy them for 80 cents or less with free UPS on the web. I have a Sony burner and 2 Pioneer burners and I don't even use the Sony because it needs more expensive media. If I bought another it would be another Pioneer.

I was gonna tell them they didn't know Shit from Shiola, but just figured i'd hurt their feelings. However, the next time I was in Best Buy the same bunch of dipsticks told me the same thing. This time I did tell them they really didn't know shit about their products. Then one guy said...what do you mean? .lol...I said let me know when you burn your commercial movies straight to a DVDR. They looked dumbfounded and still had no clue. It's fun screwin' with em' though. At least I think so.

I know it was EXTREMELY DIFFICULT to spell a 3 letter word correctly, because you were perplexed by the longer, 4 letter word "dumb" which allowed you to think "bum" was spelled "bumb." You talk a big game Ms. Thang...but the self proclaimed Jr. Matlock who was quick to call people "stupid" shows how TRULY "DUM"...uhh hummm...I mean "DUMB" the "BUM" really is!
-P.S. By the way, who the FURK is signin' those "big" paychecks for you Ham Hock Wrists? They must really be "DUM." -
People that work at Best Buy are dip SH!t's. And I do not care if they do not stock DVD-R any more. In away I think it's better that there not going to stock DVD-R. When Blue Laser come's out all those stupit shopper's will say my DVD+R does not work in my HD-DVD player LOL
-
The Best Buys and Fry's Elec. in my area still stock DVD-R but its hard to find becuase they sell out so quickly. Only DVD+R remains on the shelves. Many (most older) DVD stand alone players do not play DVD+R, only DVD and DVD-R.

You're good for something after all. How about finding some PHP spellcheck code and giving it to Baldrick if this is such an issue ? I'm worrying about video stuff.
And you're not perfect either. But enough of the Star Wars speak. Are you 14 or something?I'm not online anymore. Ask BALDRICK, LORDSMURF or SATSTORM for help. PM's are ignored. -
FIGHT FIGHT FIGHT
All spelling aside, Best Buy really does suck anymore!! -
This is not a coincidence.
-R have been dissapearing from many stores.
Lots of retailers seem to carry +Rs only... -
CompUSA has a sale going on for Memorex DVD-R, I bought ten of them today for $1.99 each.
-
Do people actually buy DVD media from stores like Best Buy anyway???
Why would you when you can get media online for about 1/2 the price???Use what works for you...
