I am currently using Unlead Video Studio 5 to capture my DV, because V5 will not save the captured video as MPEG2 file I am saving as AVI and using TMPGEnc to convert the AVI to MPEG2 and using Nero to burn to SVCD. The quality is not what I expected as a SVCD when I play it in my standalone DVD, it is very slow to refresh some scenes to the point that you can see objects come together like it is some special effect.
My question is 2 part. First is my process possibly causing quality loss? Second I would like some suggestions on capture & editing software. My current needs are very basic, as I just want to capture and burn some vacation video to disk, I do not see myself ever getting into heavy editing or special effects.

If it's Quality you want, then save your money for a DVD burner. SVCD is a far cry from a DVD. I use to do what you are doing before I bought my DVD burner, and I can tell you it's worth it.
Now you can pickup a DVD burner for around $200. It's better than spending the $200 on software only to make a poor quality SVCD.
Good luck!Got my retirement plans all set. Looks like I only have to work another 5 years after I die........
