    Hi all,

I made a bit of a c**k-up when I recorded a couple of my films to my laptop, and instead of recording in divx (which my laptop likes) I recorded in xvid (which it hates).

Unfortunately the originals are at home (1000 miles+) so I'm going to have to convert.

    Question is this.

What is the best way of converting from xvid to divx?
And is there anything to look out for when doing it?

    Cheers

Well, to convert anything to something, the computer has to be able to read (and decode) anything to start with. Which in your case means that if you want to encode an XviD to DivX, you have to be sure that your computer can handle XviD first, and then there's no point in converting any more...
I'd suggest you start with installing latest XviD codec and if that wont help ffdshow.

    Thanks mats.

I have downloaded all the latest codex, it just seems that anything I have in xvid is just not as smooth as the stuff in divx. I have no clue what is causing it but if I don't want jumps, I stick to divx.

    Cheers

    And thanks again

You could even try the fourCC changer and replace "XviD" with "DivX". If I understand it correctly, these characters in the AVI tells the computer what decoder to use. As both DivX and XviD are MPEG4 compliant, the DivX decoder can decode XviD as well, better than the "native" XviD decoder it seems, for some. I consider this cheating , but if it works - what the hell!
