OK, here's my problem. I purchased a homecooked VCD at a convention of some anime downloaded off the web. I took it home and was finally able to play it on my iMac under Quicktime by accessing one of the embedded files. This was under system 9. I then upgraded to OS X and Quicktime 6 and I can no longer play the embedded file, even when I restart under 9! The VCD plays fine in a friends new DVD player, although it still won't play on my PS2 (but I kind of expect that, so no big whoop). What's the deal? Any clue?

Apple updated Quicktime. Use vlc to watch your video. It should handle it just fine.

Video Lan Client (VLC) is the easiest method.
    www.videolan.org get the OSX version.

Once you have it open, it APPLE+D (open disk) and switch it from the default DVD to VCD, then hit ok. It will either start playing immediatly, or will require you to push the large play button.

Playback in quicktime is still possible, however requires a few steps, and a $20 dollar mpeg2 playback component.

    1. Backup the vcd to .img with toast. Rename to .bin
    2. Using VCDTOOLSX (versiontracker.com) extract the mpeg file from the vcd image (now renamed to .bin)
    3. install apples quicktime2 mpeg2 playback component (apple.com)
    4. double click on the mpeg and watch it in quicktime.

    enjoy either methods
there are also multiple VCD playback programs . just do a search for VCD on versiontracker and see all the things you can get

Or he could just use VCD Copy and rename the resulting .dat file to .mpg

Thanks for the options, I'll try them. I figured it was something about the Quicktime update, but I just couldn't get my head around Quicktime becoming LESS compliant.
