  1. if you want to convert video from :avi-divx-xvid to vcd/svcd or even dvd i believe :
    avidemux (http://fixounet.free.fr/avidemux/)

if you want to put sound and mpeg together: i use mplex ( or have a look here : http://www.cornelinux.de/linux/kavi2svcd/index-english.html )

if you want to rip cd or better made a copy i use k3b: http://k3b.sourceforge.net/

    also for burning .

with those programs/skins and others as transcode and mjpegtools you are able to do anything including movies with subtitles , cutting mpeg etc,etc

avidemux-kavi2svcd-k3b : need some more programs but that you can read in the readme or on the homepage of the aplication .

kavi2svcd is a tool for all but i use avidemux for converting because it is faster and better . also subs selecting is included .

kavie2svcd i use for the skin to help me mux video and sound .

k3b i use for making an image and burn the cd .

hope this a bit helpfull for you .

I can also recommend DVD::RIP which is great for DVD to (S)VCD/DivX/XviD with "any" type of audio track. Beats the s*it out of any Windows all-in-one DVD2something apps/fronts I've tried, and that's not so few. Requires Transcode, MPlayer. What I'm missing in Linuxland is some (S)VCD authoring app/VCDImager front that comes near VCDEasy. DVD::RIP can author/burn (S)VCD, but no interactivity/chapters...
The downside of Linux is that it's a pain collecting all dependencies and the dependencies dependencies and... before you finally can install i.e. transcode or Mplayer. A full days work, at least!

  3. agree but for any starter the k3b program is the best solution for starting dvd rip .

with suse and debian maybe more is aptget a solution to install mplayer-transcode and mjpegtools .

    You may need GOP Fixup
    http://rages.net/index.php?page=GopFixup

    DVD-Create
    http://dvd-create.sourceforge.net/news.shtml

DVDauthor (simple dvd author app, no menus yet)
    http://dvdauthor.sourceforge.net/

    some good info here
    http://linuxtv.org/dvd/

Don't forget to grab libdvd, mpeg2dec, libdecss, and some of the other necc. libs.

Actually DVDAuthor does allow menus already. There are still a few things to be inroned out in this, but I've successfully made DVDs with menus using this app.

    Hows it working?

I don't even have Linux installed right now, but have been eyeballing my Suse DVD for the past few days.

DVD authoring is the only thing that keeps me from Linux full time.

DV captures are great, mpeg encoding is there, I can Gimp out some snazzy menus, but nothing to burn with DVDR-Tools.

The last time I install kavi2svcd and DVD::RIP it took me about 20Min and I was converting avi 10min later. If you use the Mandrake flavor of linux all of the dependices can be done very quickley. But I wish somebody would come out with a gui for dvdauthoring for linux. I normally do all encoding on linux and do the authoring on win2000 and burn my DVD with linux.

take a look at http://www.tappin.me.uk/Linux/dvd.html. It is not very user-friendly but I'm sure someone will soon write a front-end for this. The functionality is all there now!
