  1. Thanks a lot for all the usefull info,

Very interesting thread. I have the same problem. Encoding 36min of footage takes around 14 hours when I enable "high quality" filtering for noise reduction. If I do not enable the noise filtering I get moskito noise here and there. With the filtering I get a final product that is very close to commercial dvd.

If I don't use the filtering then the speed is very decent with less than 2 hours encoding time for the same footage, the quality however is not nice.

Did anyone try it with dual processors? I was contemplating upgrading my system just for that.

Difference is minimal from what one person has told me (somebody I know and trust, with video/computer experience, not a stranger).
I'm not online anymore. Ask BALDRICK, LORDSMURF or SATSTORM for help. PM's are ignored.

Don't get me wrong, dual processors have all kinds of uses, but TMPGenc does not appear to handle it very well. Dual processors are mainly for graphics rendering (processor-intensive 3D) and not as much video. Also has main use in the server world.

In options, task priority, what should i put high, normal or low(when active)? High takes more time, but is it better?

Not sure, but I think I read somewhere that tmpgenc uses second CPU only for filters. So if filters are not used, there will be no difference in speed.
AFAIK standalone noise filters are better and faster than tmpgenc's.
I use Convolution3d and TemporalSmoother of AviSynch.

HIGH. And it should NOT slow down the encode. It should speed it up, as it will now be using full system resources. The task priority sets its system usage priority, nothing more. Mine is set to high. It can be twice as fast as normal or low.

That's what the old read me file said. One CPU for filters, one for encoding.

If you do a forum search, theres a couple of old articles that discuss multi CPUs and TMPG.

  10. I understand that the task priority should be high. I think it refers to the amount of time the os will give this particular app when it is running. It is probably usefull in nt4 / win2k and xp.

On my system it did not make the encoding time any longer.

Thanks for the suggestion. I will try it this weekend.
