  1. I just got a Sony DRU-500AX and it seems my Sony DVP-S500D player doesn't like the Ritek DVD-R disks (about 4 out of 5 came up "no disk" on stand alone player but work in two computers). Does anyone have any suggestions on media type to use with this Sony? Should I try +R?

I hate the thought of buying media types only to find out this player is fussy about playing recorded DVD. I am open for suggestion before I go out and buy another DVD player.

Also if I get a new Sony player I will have to get a coaxial to TOS adapter for my Sony DA 80ES receiver. Any suggestions as to a cheap but good one?

  2. If you peruse these user reviews:
    https://www.videohelp.com/dvdplayers.php?DVDnameid=430&Search=Search&#comments

You'll see that some members here have been able to use both +R and -R in that particular player. But it also looks like it's an older player, and older players are known for being a little more finicky about burned discs. You can also check the DVD Media section (under "Other," to the left) and see if anyone with that Sony has recommended any specific brands.

It could also be your authoring program, or your burning app. I use Riteks in my Sony DRX 500UL and they play in most DVD players I've tried. But ALL of the discs I've made using Dazzle DVD Complete will not play in my Toshiba standalone. They'll play fine in my PC and in my Mintek (Which will handle most anything), but they cause my Toshiba to lock up -- I have to unplug it to unfreeze it! Sonic MyDVD seems to work fine w/ all my players, though.

And some people may say that Nero, for example, may not be good for burning a video DVD, or that you need to update it for it to work, etc. etc. (Nero fans, don't flame me, I'm just using it as an example)

Basically, all of this is not truly down to an exact science. I had to go through a number of coasters (and dollar bills) to find out what worked with what I owned. There are a number of variables that could be causing your problem (do check the DVD media section, though, for suggestions), and the learning curve on DVDs is still going to cost you a few bucks no matter what...

  3. Well thanks for the reply. I decided after doing some more research to just go ahead and order a Sony DVPNS755V. This old dvd player has served me well and will now be put into the family room for the kids. I doubt I will have trouble with the Sony DVPNS755V playing anything I throw at it. Its a nice unit and actually costs less then what I paid for the DVDP-S500D.
