  1. I've noticed this.
In Windows Media Encoder 7, the last version that works on non WinXP machines, encoding to WMA9 Pro 5.1 results in an error. I've been told that it was impossible to encode WMA 5.1 on non WinXP machines.

Then, I downloaded the demo of Cool Edit Pro 2.1 for Win98SE.
In it, there is a multchannel audio encoder that outputs to either 5.1 wav, 6 mono wavs, or 7.1/5.1 WMA 9.

I exported the demo track to 5.1 WMA, and it worked perfectly fine.

So, maybe someone can come up with a Win98SE WMA 9 encoder that supports all of the codec's capabilites.

WME won't work on 98. Why? M$ is stopping support this summer, so they didn't bother to test it. It does work on W2K and XP.

Also, there are certain coding advantages to writing something W2K/XP only and dropping 9x support.

I didn't update my Win98 computer to WMP9 for this reason as too old and incompablility. It can't handle later versions of any program or whatever.

I got WMP9 installed on all Win2K computers and left the Win98 on the old version of WMP7. This version 7.1 can update to the Windows Media Audio and Video 9 Series codecs.

I also did download the WME9 encoder and still haven't installed it yet.

There is a version 7.1 of WME available for Win98 and can be downloaded from Microsoft now.

The problems ppl i know have with WMP9.... videos not playing etc.

Plus because of laziness, people are now switching over to wma instead of mp3 - as it doesnt let you encode them and is built in to xp. O_O

    arrrgh. market domination again.

Why you want to encode to WMP format?!
