  1. can i encode a VCD which has parameters that are above the "standard" format ie: higher res than 352 X 240 (NTSC), higher video/audio bitrate and have them still work on a DVD player (which is not in the computer)...i know that SVCD has a res of 480 X 480 and overall better standard setting.

    thanks for your help

Yes I do it all the time but my dvd player plays anything Acoustic solutions, If your dvd plays svcd's then you should be okay with useing higher settings, i was never that happy with the quaility of vcd which is why i tryed experimenting with all the different settings, if its strictly vcd the no chance, never tryed the header trick, i saved up and bought a dvd burner, all these years wasted encoding video.

You're talking about making an XVCD. Increasing the bitrate might be OK, but changing the resolution isn't very likely to work. Have you tried the Header Trick? It allows some VCD-only players to play SVCD's. There's a guide in the Convert Section. 8)
