  1. Hi everybody.

First of all, I would just like to say, that I’m very new to all this, VCD, SVCD and so on.

Ok, I’ll just get right to it:

    3 days ago, I got a DVD player, a United 3052M.

I had some movies on my computer, but I though, that I would see it on my new and good-looking DVD player. But then the DVD says "Unknown Disc"

I couldn't understand, and though it might be the regions code, but it wasn't that. Then I read a lot, from different sites, about problems and so on, and find out, that a DVD can't decode an AVI movie (DivX), but only can play MPEG...

Well, got damn I though, cause all my movies is in AVI, except 3-4 there is MPEG...

Well, my problem then, is... Which program is the best to use, to convert my AVI DivX movies, into a suitable format, my DVD can play.

How long time does it take? Approximately

And is it then VCD / SVCD???

I know this is a very basic question, but again I will draw your attention to the fact, that I'm very much a newbie.

I really hope you will help me with this

  2. Hi,

The easiest way would be to download DVD2SVCD. This can also convert .avi (DivX) files to either VCD or SVCD. It's pretty easy to use and does all the work for you.

  3. 1) Not all DVD players will play VCD or SVCD. Some will play one and not the other. Use the DVD players list on the left to find out what capabilities your player has.

    2) Even if your player does play VCD and/or SVCD it doesn't mean it will play them from CDR(W) media. (Though this seems to be less of a problem than it used to be). Again, the DVD players list should help.

Assuming you are still happy that your player will handle (S)VCD and CDR(W) and want to learn how to convert your avi's, take a look at the convert section on the left of the page. Find a guide or two that fits your situation and try to follow them. Most of the tools used in these guides are freeware, shareware or downloadable demos, so you don't have to shell out cash for something that doesn't do what you want/need.

If you run into problems, come back and ask specific questions, giving as much detail as you can about what you have done and where things seem to have gone wrong. Be patient, learn and most of all have fun.
