What for and where is optical out used. I have never seen this used.

This is one of the 2 types of Digital Audio connectors used on DVD Players, it is known as SP/DIF for Sony Phillips digital interface the oth type of connector you see is a standard RCA connector, this spdif connections is refered to as coax where as trhe one you referance is optical spdif. You can use either/or to connect to you Dolby Digital converter to get your wonderfull 5.1 Surround Sound that makes DVD's so cool.
