Would a format delete a boot sector virus?

If it doesnt, does the command listed above on title do it?

A format probably wouldn't take care of it because that normally doesn't touch the boot sector.

"fdisk /mbr" in 95/98/ME probably will take care of it, but if the virus left something laying around to reinstall itself automatically then it won't do you any good. And if you're using any nonstandard boot loaders (like System Commander) or disk drivers (like EZ-Drive) you might do more harm than good. If you do try it, you should do it from a boot CD or a locked boot floppy made before your system was infected.

In NT/2000 (and I assume XP) you'd want to boot the install CD instead and tell it to repair an existing install, and set it to only check the boot sector.

  3. Boot sector viruses can be quite willy so just rewriting the boot sector may well not get rid of it (especially if it has infected something else).

I suggest that you get some sort of virus program to clean it properly. I personally like McAfee and you can get a fully functioning demo for free.
