I'm feelin' your pain, too. My system specs are like yours, but, I can't get any faster than 1.2x.

go into explorer and right click on the dvd drive and chek if the dma option is checked?

Well something is definitely wrong. On my Hitachi 8x drive, I usually rip between 3-5x and it can peak at >7x.
Make sure DMA is turned on for your drive as this can make a big difference.
Someone quite a while ago mentioned that (paradoxically) turning off UDMA support for the drive in BIOS actually speeded it up. You could try this -- it's harmless and you can always change it back.

wow... I'm stock that no one really knows the answer to the questions...
Thanx for the advise, but didn't solve to problem yet!!!
Where's the guy with the brains on the site? need his/her HELP!!! alot of us can't get it past 2X...
my old machine went to 5X -
Well, I checked the DMA box in my DVD properties box (accessed through the Device manager, Systems, CDroms) and have rebooted it, but I'll have to clear some room on the drive before I can try it out. Windows claimed that turning the option on could have "undesireable effects on the Hardware" whay would it? What is this DMA thing?

Any chance your drive is a Toshiba? Mine is and I have noticed that it does dvd's at different speeds. I read on some other posts though that something is built into the Toshibas that limits their ripping speed to 2x on certain encrypted dvds.
