Question: Earlier in the thread someone had suggested using the .ifo and .buf files from the original DVD. Why would this make a difference.
not sure where that was discussed, it may help - but to be honest if the unburned video-ts folder does not play in apple dvd player, DO NOT BURN IT! you need to find out why they are not working, usually this is because you messed with the dvd format, ie removed things that should be there. how are you making these dvd's

are you doign anything other than just letting dvd2one process them? pulling .vob's out by yourself etc?

no this dvd (wiggles) is only 3.8Gb. I am backing it up so the original doens't get destroyed by the kids.
Question: How do I use Sim mode to see if the burn will be valid?
Right now I am using RW’s.
no point if you are using -rw to do sim mode. a rw disk can be rewritten so why do a simulation mode? if you want to just set it to simulatoin mode and go through the normal burn process, only difference is it doesnt burn anything!
    ok
Question: Even after a quick erase using Toast: could there be something left on the RW preventing the proper DVD read?
possible, but not likely. the full erase takes FOREVER!! but it may help.
    ok

    Any more suggestions???
whats the problem again? coasters? by what definition? they dont play in your dvd player? does it support -rw disks? You really need to find out why the video-ts folder isnt playing in apple dvd player. vlc is WAY to forgiving with non standard dvd's so thats not a good thing to base it on.

burned disc does not play in apple dvd player or standalone dvd player.
    only plays with VLC.

previous disc played in apple dvd player and standalone dvd player.

tell me EXACTLY what you did from the start
    1. put dvd in mac
    then what?!?!?!?!
    put dvd in mac
    start dvdbackup (also tried osex)
    drop and drag files
take output video_ts folder and put under a new folder with dvd title
    add in a audio_ts folder
drag whole shebang to toast 6

    coaster

    thanks! here's your problem

    DRAG AND DRAG FILES!
    you cant do that!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
instead, drag the entire mounted dvd to dvdbackup. then process ALL DVD FILES!!!!!!!!!!

if you want the dvd to have any chance of playing, you have to get ALL OF THE FILES.

if your dvd is over 4.7 gigs on full backup you have to use dvd2one. if its under or equaly to 4.7 gigs on full backup, you just burn in toast.

    make since?

If you need to use a MODE other than UDF for burning...read below....

I've seen a tutorial on not generating those 2 Desktop files
It involved creating a HARD DRIVE PARTITION for burning only..
That is, make a partiton to be left blank on your hard drive...
After DVD Studio Pro creates your DVD VOLUME to the Hard Drive (or you've copied everything with dvd backup)

you just initialize this partition, swing the DVD VOLUME onto the blank initialized surface

    and BURN

the resultant disc does not contain those files

IN UDF (the proper mode for DVD VIDEO, you won't get these files anyway)

while we are talking about this, ill say not true! at least with 6.0. it could be a bug, but if you burn 1 dvd, then remove the item with the app still open and set up another session, those little desktop DB files appear in UDF mode!

the only way i have found to correcct this is to close the app and open it again for each new burn.

Thanks for correcting me Galactica.. In 5 this was true

Now do you know about Desktop files?
They are bad..People have found they contain information about you and your software...by accident..One user found 'urls' of porn sites he had visited months ago stored in the .db file..another found the serial numbers entered into his applictions had made their way here...bad
    look here

    Who knew!
i have not had a bad experience with them being there or not, but then again my dvd player is really forgiving, others have said their presence on a dvd stops it from being able to play in a standalone dvd player

Burning from an IMAGE you don't get them do you GALACTICA?

I don't have enough experience to remember and I'm lucky enough that MY APEX ignores them if present as well
when I've not used UDF when burning a DVD

    1. is this a movie only copy?
    2. why is it only 3.28 gigs?

whats the SOURCE video_ts folder have in it? Its size?

  14. In this case it was a movie only copy.

    SOOOOO guess what?
The DVD-RW (TDK DVD-RW 2x 4.7Gb 120min) that I am testing with plays just fine in my friends PC DVD player and also in his stand-alone player.

It however does not play in my Sony Standalone (I get the not permitted display), it does not play in my Apple software DVD player. It does not even show up on my IBM laptop DVD/CD-RW drive.

So it was the FREAKING MEDIA. ARGH.

I just tried burning with some Ritek 4x (love the 13 min burn times) and it went just fine. This whole time I am trying to prevent coasters using this DVD-RW and that's what is not being liked by my equipment. *sigh* talk about frustrating.

btw my friend is considering get some new DVD writer that does 8x. wow.
6-7 min burn times. yeah yeah.

oh and galatica...thanks really. i really appreciate it.

anyone wanna buy some 2X TDK DVD-RWs

my next suggestion was about to be media....
have to remember, not all dvd players can play -rw disks!
but at least you found the solution!

  16. Ok, I've tried numerous times following the directions posted and the dvd will not play. I'm running Panther, have a new Lacie DVD Burner and I'm using Memorex DVD-RW media. I am attempting to copy a DVD concert that I own for back-up purposes. It is a little over 7 gigs. I use DVD Backup. Then DVDoneX and then Toast 6 Titanium. I don't get any errors when I burn but the DVD will not play in either my Lacie drive (dvd player opens but won't run), or my Apple DVD player (where, upon inserting the disk, it spins for a few seconds and then ejects the disc). Please help. Thanks.

Also, Toast 6 sees my Lacie player as a Pioneer. Is this normal?

  20. just wanted to say thanks to Galactica and everyone who helped me. OMG this stuff is so simple. Now I understand how those DVD authoring companies put together the menus and how they are linked. Everything about this stuff is sooooo easy once you play with one DVD. I even took out certain annoying trailers etc.

you will have to upload it to a server of your own or some method of getting it to a web address

once you have that its just [ img ] and the url for the image followed with [/img ]
if you cant do that, just email it to me.

  23. OOPS . I GOT ONE QUESTION GUYS.

In DVD2OneX I have (2) two hour long movies listed in the window. Both exactly the same length of time.

One has 33 chapters and one has 13 chapters.

The 33 chapters is the main movie so what is the movie with only 13 chapters? It's NOT the Directors Commentary because the directors commentary is just the main movie but with a separate audio AC3 track.

It's not another language because I played them and they are also 33 chapters.

    So what is it?

    Thanks

im confused, you have 2 movies there. as in your using the join feature?
if so, i would say the 33 chapter 1 is the 1st movie
the 13 chapter one is the 2nd movie. can you provide a little more detail, or perhaps a screen shot?

  26. hey it looks like you have 4 emails waiting bro :P

Galactica , what I was saying was that I am in USER DEFINED MODE and in the main window at the bottom where it lists all the titles I have one 2:05:02 title that contains 33 chapters and I have another title that is 2:05:02 with 13 chapters.

Both the same movie length of 2 hours but one has the full 33 chapters and one only has 13 chapters.

    TITLES CHAPTERS ANGLES DURATION
    1 33 1 2:2:05:02
    2 13 1 2:2:05:02

Also, whenever I select user defined mode the menus don't get burned.
It just seems to burn the main movie.I guess this is normal?

Ok, here is a screenshot of dvd2one

I have OUTPUT set to USER DEFINED. this simply means you get to choose the output size, thats all.

now, for getting menu's extras etc, that has nothing to do with user defined. instead, look to where it says COPY. your options are
    1. JOIN as seen here - allows you to join 2 dvd video_ts folder into 1
    2. Movie - which is just the movie NO MENU'S, EXTRAS etc
    3. Disc - which is just that, the entire disk - hence menu's extras etc

now, this example is of The One (Jet Li).
Notice there is Title 1 and Title 4 who have the same number of chapters, same length etc. That is because this particular DVD has BOTH widescreen and full screen (hence one is wide, other is full)

now, the only way you actually get to see this option is when you are in movie only or join mode.
note how in this picture, which is DISC COPY mode, you dont get to see these because they are all being copied.

    make since???

ps, i still have yet to get an email from anyone so I hope this helps.

    dwarf
Im not entirely sure whats going on with yours. Everything looks good in your toast screenshot. I have no idea why its showing up as a pioneer drive. does it work for other things, cd burning for example?
just curious. can you try the burned dvd-rw in something you know for a fact plays -rw disks?

  28. ok , thats great Galactica. I already have those settings set the way
I want but what I'm asking is about these settings.

This movie has two titles. they are BOTH the same video content
however, it says that one title has 33 chapters and one has 13.

When watching the movie it DOES have 33 chapters.
What I'm asking is what the heck then is the title that is only 13 chapters?
I can't find a separate VOB file for it. The 13 chapter version is embedded into the same 33 chapter video file.
I thought at first that it was the Directors Commentary and it just contained 13 chapters but it's not.
The Directos Commentary also has 33 chapters just like the main movie.

    Thanks

    User Defined
    Film
    Constant

    TITLES CHAPTERS ANGLES DURATION
    1 33 1 2:2:05:02
    2 13 1 2:2:05:02

I would include a image but I returned the Hulk already :P

you should see these as seperate .vob files

look to your VIDEO_TS folder for this particular movie (the ripped one)
look to the file size for the video_ts folder. you should see a section of large file sizes, then another. thats the two title sets.
