ill give it a try. Would be interested to see how fast it is compared to say TOAST! Which is what I use to make my dvd-r into images. Just select COPY, go to FILE and SAVE AS DISK IMAGE. works every time. Quite fast too for dvd.Originally Posted by llee782

Hi,
I have been a lurker for some time and want to thank you all for the information I have gained.
I have a little problem I was hoping you could help with....
I am able to backup and burn successfully using DVDbackup 1.3 , DVD2one, and Toast. The DVDs play in all of my home players.
However, the DVDs I am burning have many visual skips and sound dropouts in them while viewing in the DVD player. They play fine on the computer but once I burn them, they have the errors.
I have an Imac 94 17' with 768 f ram running os 10.2.6, Toast Titanium 5.1.1 and am using Movie copy only in DVD2one. I have been burning at 2x with the default ram cache set to 2mb.
What is the problem and how can I fix it?
Thanks, Mitch
p.s. I have never made a AUDIO_TS folder. Do I really need to? If so, what goes in there? -
Galactica...
I told you I would let you know how well I did with your tutorial; It's an amazing piece of information. I have burned three disks with no skips,
dropouts...no problems at all. Your tutorial is better than the one provided by mushkin memory.
Thanks for all your help..
I'm sure thousands of people have benefited from the time you have taken to do this.

Just a note to say thanks for all the info! This has been working for me perfectly...I didn't think I could get it going but you made it very easy...you are a very kind and patient man,Galactica......

I have used this tutorial many times very successfully ... in both 5 and 6 ... so .. thanks a lot Galactica ...
But I am running into something wierd and new ...
those pesky DS_Store or Desktop DB / Desktop DF files only show up when I hit the record button ... and i cannot remove them ...
when i still have the chance to hit "cancel" those files go back into hiding ... so .. i cannot remove them anymore ...
this has not happened before .. but now it happens in 5 and 6 .. in 5 i can still cancel, in 6 it already starts burning and i know i will have a coaster ...
P
here a screen shot (at least i am trying
-
actually, what it looks like is NOT that the .ds_store are coming back but rather your are just seeing the addition of desktop files in v5 of toast. I am pretty sure these wont do anything - ie cause coasters.
Can you tell me you get the same response in Toast 6?
If so can you post those screenshots??? -
What came out of T5 sure was a coaster ...
in T6 it also happens that those 2 desktop files only show up once i started burning ... in 40 minutes i will know if i have another shiny frisbee.
What is puzzling is that I must have burned 50 DVDs in the last couple of weeks using t5 and t6 and that has not occured yet ... i was able to delete / remove / clear what i wanted and nothing else showed up once i hit record ...
cheers -
after talking on iChat I still think you should contact roxio about this.
I am aware that this should not happen for dvd.
I never see desktop files being added after i hit burn. only on cdr data will i see that, and that can be turned off. -

To rid yourself of .DS store files, you can use Cocktail, .DS Store Cleaner,
or 20 or so other products from www.versiontracker.com.
I use Cocktail to remove the .DS store files ( version 2.21) and then
run the Pilot, BEFORE I do any burning on my main disc, as well as
the partitions from which my DVD2One Backups are stored, and when
I go to burn, there is no problems, and these files do not show up. -
terryj
can you post a screenshot
I dont see this ANYWHERE on my Toast 6!!! -
well yes..... for cd's
but what about dvd's!
the option dissapears as soon as you click DVD-ROM UDF -
hmm...
ok I see that the option does disappear on DVDs.
A test I did this morning on BOAT TRIP
also put the .DS Store file there, but not the
Desktop DB. This is not suprising,
as I have re-used this partition about
5 or six times in doing DVD2ONE copies,
and have not yet had time to run
.DS Store cleaner, or Cocktail.
However, I can click on the file, and click the remove button,
and it goes away.
Since these files are no consequencs, I'm not understanding how they are affecting
the original poster's DVDs:
from Apple Mac OS X discussions:
"The file is created by the operating system and contains updated information on what is stored on the device. The "." that appears in front of the name is the Unix filenaming convention that makes that file invisible. If you see the file listed, you probably aren't booted into OS X or are using a different filemanger than Finder or have turned on the Finder's ability to see invisible files."
the only way the could affect another (OS) is if they were made to be
VISIBLE?
this can be controlled in the System Preferences, by making it show
all invisible items as visible. I know for a fact you can set this option
while repairing permissions in Cocktail. -
I agree it is odd that invisible files would inhibit the dvd from playing, but then again anything possible.
for some .ds_store files dont make a difference
for others they inhibit playing.
could just be his specific dvd player.
ah well, the problem was solved.
Quitting toast after each burn will make the next burn not have the desktop files.
wierd huh. -
did your G5 come with 10.2.8 and it worked fine then?
or has it always been like this since you got it? -
My G5 came with Panther. New install. Computer wasn't used before.
I have not yet used the finder burning tools, but I'd still like to know why this is happening.
Peace -
typically those errors come with cheap media.
what is the brand of the 4x media you are using? -
I'll let you know what is was. Don't laugh :P
It was the buffer underrun option. I already knew about it but in Toast 6 when you uncheck it, it doesn't stay that way. Each time you close Toast it reverts back.
I thought it was staying on "unchecked" but it was always reverting.
God, so lame. lol
I love my DP G5 :P !!!!!!!!! -
I would have it checked.
Be sure to update to the 6.03 version -
In my experience buffer underrun checks can cause bad burns just as much as good burns.
I am using a DP G5 with retail Panther and retail Toast 6.0.3 and DVD images do not burn at 4X when the box is checked.
I am burning DVD Studio Pro 2 image so maybe Apple has some type of protection that disables writing at 4X.
If you want to test different setups use "simulation mode" and you will see for yourself.
Peace -
How can I figure our what I am doing wrong?!?!? ARGH!
Sorry, but I am sooooooooooooooooo frustrated.
I’ve got a couple of DVDs to burn by tomorrow. They have to go back to a friend.
System G4 1.25DP running 10.2.8.
Using DVDBackup 1.3 / DVD2OneX / Toast 5 and 6
I never had a problem. Followed the scripts. After tons of coasters (freaking crappy matrix media), was burning DVD np.
After upgraded to 10.2.8. Couldn’t burn anymore. Upgraded Toast 6. no dice. Btw Toast is working just fine with CD copies etc.
Sometimes I would see .ds store files. Downloaded Cocktail and got rid of them. Still no go.
So I followed the steps.
I don’t see any .ds files.
My burned Disc looks like
Disc title
Doubleclick leads to two directories: AUDIO_TS and VIDEO_TS
Audio_TS is empty. VIDEO_TS has all files: .buf .ifo and .vobs
Here are the errors that I am seeing :
I get a “Not Permitted” when trying to use the Apple player with the DVD auto-mounted when I insert the disc.
When I use the Apple DVD Player and go to file à open video_ts folder and open up the video_ts folder on the burned dvd, I get:
There was a system error. Could not detect a valid media file.
Using VLC, if I go to open file and go the video_ts folder on the burned disc, the disc plays just fine…menu and all.
Question: Earlier in the thread someone had suggested using the .ifo and .buf files from the original DVD. Why would this make a difference.
Question: How do I use Sim mode to see if the burn will be valid?
Right now I am using RW’s.
Question: Even after a quick erase using Toast: could there be something left on the RW preventing the proper DVD read?
Any more suggestions???
Galactica / anyone: can u help me? *sigh*
-
10.2.8 is an awful update. I bet its the update, if you can go back to 10.2.6
Question: Earlier in the thread someone had suggested using the .ifo and .buf files from the original DVD. Why would this make a difference.
are you doign anything other than just letting dvd2one process them? pulling .vob's out by yourself etc?
