  1. I'm trying to create a DVD from a set of mpeg1 streams using DVDSP. It's a series so I want to stuff as many episiodes on a single DVD as possible so I'm avoiding mpeg2. After a bit of research I found out what size the mpeg1 should be:

352x288 PAL or 240 if NTSC and the bitrate mustn't exceed 1858kbs.

So I used ffmpegx to save out an NTSC sized mpeg1. It plays fine in QuickTime and imports successfully into DVDSP but I can't preview the video. Has anyone successfully made an mpeg1 DVD - and if they have could they share the magic . BTW I do not want to create VCD's - I need the disc to play in a PS2 so it must be a proper DVD.

    I have the same problem...
    I demuxed some vcd mpeg1s
import the m1v and mp2 into dvdsp
all seems good, but it won't preview?
Build the disc anyways and test in dvd player ... no go..
Test in vlc and it works (not surprising)

I have read numerous posts suggesting mpeg1 works in dvdsp.

I would like to know whats up ... anyone?

I also have tried building in Sizzle & Missing Mpeg Tools and it does work (without the menus)

    Thanks yexplorer,
the program looks very useful, but I still want to know why the files arent working with dvdsp.

I forgot to mention that I did convert my mp2 sampling frequency to 48.0 Khz before importing ints dvdsp. - so thats not the problem.

DVDSP for some reason won't preview MPEG-1 material in its projects, although if you go ahead and build the DVD, and test it in Apple DVD Player, you'll see everything actually works fine. Go ahead and do a short test to verify it for yourself.

    thanks Antny,

believe it or not, I did build the disc from dvdsp and then opened the video_ts folder in apple dvd player... and it didn't work,

Maybe I'll burn it on dvd-rw and test it in my standalone player.

    I don't know whats up....

Btw ... I've burned several successful dvds with mpeg2, chapters and menus too..

One more obvious question .. are you selecting one of the tracks as the startup play item? Sometimes that does slip the mind...

Also, make sure your MPEG-1 video stream was encoded with closed GOPs. I think DVDSP will sometimes lets video without closed GOPs import, Apple DVD Player may not necessarily play them back properly when built as a DVD.

I'm not too sure about the closed GOPs. I've been trying to figure out GOPs. All I know is that they are a marker at beginning of a group of pictures used for ff and rewind?? I'm not sure to how to tell if my m1vs have it or not.

    I appreciate your help.

I'm using DVD Studio Pro 1.5, and although sometimes I think it lies, it will attempt to tell you if your video has closed GOPs or not. Select your MPEG-1 video stream in the Assets window. In the Property Inspector window (on the right), one of the categories is Closed GOP, with a Yes or No beside it.

I've found DVDSP to be really relaxed on some days, and very temperamental on others. To write this post, I demultiplexed a VCD-ready MPEG that was encoded to spec for VCD, and DVDSP readily imported both the video, and the 44.1kHz audio (which it shouldn't do).

If your video has open GOPs, theres no way to fix it without re-encoding the entire thing. Those streams are best put on VCD, which doesn't have significant GOP issues (unless you try to do entrypoints).

okay for some reason its working now. I suppos its possible that I had forgotten to choose a startup action.
I've been using MediaPowerTool (Bile). it works (a little awkardly)
it produced several files just fine, but two caused errors in dvdsp.
One said the data rate was too high (was the mux rate over 1.8kbps) I don't know - I'll test.
Other times dvdsp just crashed when it reached a certain track.. I just removed it for testing sake.

Im burning a dvd-rw write now to go test it in my player.

I checked the GOPs on some of the files and they weren't closed... So I still don't know what to think about them.

    Hey... it works!
