  1. What's the best way to store your burned DVD-R/+R discs that come in splindles and no jewel case?

Please share what devices you have found useful, besides jewel cases and the generic CD wallets.

    Important qualities include:
    1) compact design
    2) easy to catalog discs
    3) easy to access discs
    4) high capacity
    5) cheap

I use CD wallets (the ones that are 2 CD's high per insert) that have about 80 capacity.

I then have a database to track movies, their respective wallet (coded of course) and other detail. I don't bother about alphabetical order within the wallet, as all you need is a quick flick, but I do try to group by genre where possible (Eg. home movies, kiddie flicks, music vids, action, trash, series etc).

I occasionally print a sticky label on the front+spine of the wallet which lists the contents (in alphabetical not inserted order - again a quick flick is all you need). Gives me a used for the pile of left-over bits from the inefficient fullpage CD label prints I used to do for VCD's. And no, I don't put labels on my DVD's.

I also occasionally print a master list of movies in alphabetical order with the wallet code next to it so when we have a crowd, I simply hand the menu over and say, "make a choice". It also has a media column (DVD, (S)VCD, DVD-VCD, etc) comment column (eg. Crappy sound, blocky, etc.).

With 400 odd titles, I found individual cases impractical, and trying to keep physically in alphabetical order too ridiculous.
The glass is neither half-full, nor half-empty.
It is simply twice as big as it needs to be.

  5. Hi,

With regular cd's I used the thin jewel cases wich you could just put two cd's on top of each other I think 60 % of a regular jewel case. But with DVD I don't want to take the risk of scratching them so I have now bought 80 of the thinnest jewel cases (I think they called slim cases) that is 50% of a regular jewelcase. Then I have bought A4 sticker paper that I cut up in strokes of 5 mm wide and 12 cm long and stick that to the very thin side of the cases. That way I can write the tilte on it so I know what's on the DVD. It realy saves space I also like the double slim cases but they are a bit expensive. The Startrek deepspace nine DVD box sets I bought yesterday also have a great strorage wich I would like to buy if I can find them. It's 6 joined slim cases wich is very handy if you want to keep certain dvd's together.

  7. After taking the time to print out hundreds of CD jewel case labels I came to the conclusion the reason I'm switching over to DVD is to save space... so I went the CD Wallet storage route.

I put Neato labels on all my DVDs and then put them in various wallets of around 100 a piece (this seems a good compromise between the unwieldiness of the 200+ systems, and the smallness of the 50 or so ones). Right now I'm using a wallet from Fellowes, I do believe, that's called something like the Body Glove or some such and I think it's the best I've seen -- incredibly light and professional looking.

With the labels on it's easy to flip open pages and identify at a glance my various series -- and the labels protect the top (the critical data portion) of the disk. Neato has seemingly solved the problem of early labels coming off or otherwise causing problems -- I have labeled CDs that have been playing fine for years now.

But best of all, I can now fit 200 or 300 DVDs in a small section of one shelf of my bookshelf and still have room for plenty of books (whereas that many VHS tapes took up the entire bookshelf).

  9. I've been using the Rolodex-type case featured here:

    http://www.discgear.com/templates/multiple_group_pricelist.asp?GroupGuid=11006&Languag...Selector%20100

    and here:

    http://www.discgear.com/templates/multiple_group_pricelist.asp?GroupGuid=11020&Languag...EN#ROMdex%2080

They're pricey, but easy to access without having to flip pages.

I was hoping someone had a cheaper solution that was just as
    rapid...and dust free...

It would depend on the weather I suppose.

If he wanted to temporarily store more, he would have to sit at the back of a bus or read a lingerie catalogue.

DVD cases from Meritline.com or Americal.com
I'm not online anymore. Ask BALDRICK, LORDSMURF or SATSTORM for help. PM's are ignored.

Just read this thread after days of skipping it, Can't stop laughing!!!

Reminds me of my mate ( honest, it wasn't me!!), he got his wife to lay naked on the bed while he tried to throw cd's on her nipples .
We later joked that all his cd's would be skipping due to nipple prints!!!

  15. I have several storage systems.

Years ago I started recording TV shows on VHS tape - and have about 2000 of them - each EP (yep - quality issues). I eventually ran out of storage at my house - so I switched over to VCD. Initially used Terapins to record - but these units are not reliable and have no Coax/Tuner/Timer - so I purchased 10 MPEG1 (VCD ready) tuner/capture cards direct from the manufacturer in Tiwan and wrote software to coordinate the 10 computers to record up to 10 channels at the time. Each computer has a CD-RW drive - so I write out VCDs of the stuff I want to keep every month or so. Recently ordered another 10,000 CD-R media to keep this going.

Now I have a Panasonic E30 and save stuff to Accu DVD-R if I want the additional quality - mainly for movies. Love the E30! Still use VCD for series as I don't have to worry about keeping disc in - records to the hard drive - no worries. I even wrote a web server that I can use on my Sprint Treo Palm phone to program in shows and review list of scheduled/recorded shows when away from home.

I use stackable VHS storage cases for the tapes. I was using CD wallets (about 100 CDs each case) - but these got expensive after 40 and take up too much storage space - so I now store CDs in paper sleeves with clear window and put them in plastic storage units I found at my local Staples store - wide drawers which are a little deeper than the CD - stores A LOT or them - and only $40 each.

DVD-R I now store in the above mentioned CD wallets for additional protection.

I wrote a database to indicate storage location - and allow quick additions of new material and rapid searches of programs by name and, where approperiate, show episode name.

Do you think I am being a bit obsessive about this?

We go through a bunch of DVDs here at work and we have tons of cases left over. So I got permission to bring all the leftover cases home with me. I have 100's of free DVD cases in a big box in my closet. When ever I burn a DVD I grab one of those cases. I store my burnt DVDs on top of my Bought DVDs.

  17. I was just storing my discs in the slim plastic CD cases however this weekend I went out and bought two leather binders that hold 208 DVds each. This works out much better than the plastic cases and I can now easily locate any DVD since they are in the binders alphabetically. Also since the binders have an outer zipper the discs are protected from damage caused by light exposure.

  19. I use the ultra slim Jewel Cases. They are half the size of a standard Jewel Case, and Neato/Fellowes recently came out with ink jet printable labels for the Jewel cases which "AMAZINGLY" fit the title of the movie on the spine and use every centimeter of space to get the title of the movie to fit perfectly. Using standard DVD cases is way too space consuming in my opinion and I have these CD/DVD Towers which stand about 5 feet high and I can put 220 of these ultra thin jewel cases in one tower. I have two of those towers, and at the slow pace I backup DVD's currently...I have a very long time to fill the 440 disk capacity. 8)
