I ran a encode last night ( started with mpeg2 format) however I think I did something wrong cause here it what I ended up with:
3 files:
-MCF FILE
-M2V FILE
-WAV FILE
And This was my settings:
DVD NTSC (MPEG-2 720x480 29.97fps CBR 5533kbps, Linear PCM 48000Hz 1536kbps)
However from the tutorials I have looked at, this seems wrong to then burn to DVD. Meaning it is not in the format NERO wants. So what did I do wrong???? And can this format be burned without re-encoding???? If so, what proggie should allow this????? I honestly have been trying for a week to get all this figured out and I feel like I am always taking 20 steps backwards....
Thanks for any help you can give.........

M2V= mpeg2 video only stream
WAV= uncompressed PCM audio only stream
You need to import these files into a DVD Authoring program. Nero is only a burning program.
Please read the guides
https://www.videohelp.com/guides
If you don't have a Authoring progam, Ulead and DVDLab offer free demos to help you create your first title.
You can use IFO Edit to make a simple movie only video too.
A simple flow chart-
Encode A/V material to DVD compliant streams
--Read the articles and help file of your authoring program to see if they except all DVD valid formats, and set your encoder accordingly. Read the howto guides (lots of info there), and use the forum search button.
Import your streams into the autoring program of your choice.
--Read the guides, and reviews about the prospective program you've chosen. Read, and re-read the help file included.
Export
--Your choice here, export a title set (VIDEO_TS and AUDIO_TS folders) to import into the burning program of your choice.
Export an image file, the program compiles the project to title set folders, then creates a UDF iso image file to be burnt.
Ulead DVD movie factory is a very basic and simple program to use for DVD authoring. Add your movie (encoded or not), create a cheesy menu, then hit go, and come in an hour or so with a burnt DVD. -
Sorry but I am confused. I had a mpeg2 video format and I thought I was then supposed to encode to a DVD format with TMPEng after which I could use a burner to put to DVD. Instead, I took a mpeg2 and converted it and by what you are saying I will still need to author it which I believe will re-encode it, correct???? If so then why did I encode to begin with???? This can not be this difficult.....................
Any additional help would be appreciated..... -
Authoring will not re-encode your video stream, IF it was encoded properly in the first place.
Let's get some more info here.
What type of source are you working with?
What settings did you use in TMPG?
Frame size
frames per second
encoding method/bitrate
GOP size
frequency of gop header
max # of frames per gop
What authoring program do you have/are using? -
If your source was MPEG2 there was no need to re-encode it (and fact sounds like he de-muxed it). Here's some background that might help:
MPEG is a codec for motion video (and audio) files. There are several different MPEG video formats out there including: VCD, SVCD, CVD, and DVD. VCD uses MPEG1 and SVCD,CVD and DVD use MPEG2. See the "what is" section to the left for more detail on each format. You need to encode your source video with the correct codecs for each format.
While it's true that a DVD uses MPEG2 video, you can not just drag and drop a MPEG2 video file on a DVDR and get a DVD. The DVD has to be authored. Authoring is the process of making the need files/folders to be an 'offical/white book standard DVD' (again see the what is section).
The DVD standard calls for MPEG2 video at 720x480, 352x480 or 352x240, with either ac3 or PCM (ie. uncompressed wav) audio.
DVD video data is stored in VOB files. VOB files contain: video, audio and subtitles. All these different streams are 'muxed' together into one file. You can also seperate these streams to seperate files by a process known as de-muxing (or de-multiplexing).
m2v = MPEG2 video file (only video)
mp2 = mpeg I layer II audio file (only audio, not DVD standard)
wav = uncompressed audio file (only audio) aka PCM
ac3 = compressed audio file (only audio)
Now some authoring programs will take muxed MPEG files, but many only take seperate streams. Once you load all the streams the program will check to make sure everything conforms to the DVD standard, then mux everything to make the needed VOB (and other) files.
All these files will be placed in a folder called "VIDEO_TS" which you can then burn to a DVDR.
Encoding is the process of generating the streams (or the whole) MPEG.
Authoring is the process of generating the VOB files.
Authoring does NOT affect quaility (that's all done when you encode).
You say your source is MPEG2. What's the resolution and what type of audio does it contain. Because odds are you can just author from that. -
Just a follow-up. But First, Thanks for the detailed explanation from earlier I really need all the help I can get........
What I think might of occurred is that my actual source file was a MPEG2 file however it was at 480X480 and the audio was within it. I thought I had to encode to a DVD standard at which time I used TMPGEnc and encoded it to:
DVD NTSC (MPEG-2 720x480 29.97fps CBR 5533kbps, Linear PCM 48000Hz 1536kbps)
What I thought was that it would encode to a DVD format but it encoded to M2V (Video) and WAV ( Audio ). So since I posted I tried Author with MovieFactory2 however it is to big to fit on disk, so yes ever conceivable problem seems to be occurring. And yes, The movie source file was big however I was told earlier it would fit. If you have any further input I would appreciate it.......
Thanks
