wmp9 mpeg2 sound problem

I am running 98se and just installed directx9 and wmp6 stopped playing mpeg2 files (an error: Microsoft c++ runtime library). done some reading and installed wmp9 and re-installed power dvd xp and now they play but the sound is in a higher pitch (sort of like it was dubed by the chipmunks). the video seems to be playing at a normal speed just the sound has been effected.

Unsure if this is the same problem you have, but I had the same going on with my setup and mpeg2. Video fine, sound had high pitched crackles and other auditory garbage.

Turned out, through my stupidity, I had 3 mpeg2 audio decoders installed.
Uninstalled 2 of them which corrected the problem.
