  1. Okay, not necessarily looking to rip and convert audio to digital 5.1 surround sound. However, when I burn a VCD (whether it be from a clip or a DVD rip) I can't listen to anything on any of my speakers that are connected to my receiver. I have a Kenwood Surround Sound receiver with KLH center and surround channels, dual 15" Cerwin Vega front channels and a JBL PB12 powered sub. The only audio I get is from the TV itself and I think this may be because the DVD player I am playing this through is connected to the receiver via an Optical audio cable. Burned music CDs work just fine and I get full surround sound with those. Any idea what changes I can make to atleast hear it through something other than a crappy set of 6X9's in my TV?

    Hi,

You have to setup your DVD player (what brand is it actually?) to output audio streams to digital output... Now you should hear something thru your speakers...

    Good luck...

I mean, check your downmix settings of your DVD player...

  4. It's already set up that way. Store bought DVDs, Store bought CDs and burned CDs all work just fine through the optical connection and everything plays great. The only thing that will not work are burned VCDs.

Sounds like your reciever can't decode MPEG audio, just PCM (audio CD's) or AC3(also known as dolby digital, DVD)
this is easy to solve, simply set the output of the DVD player in it's menu to PCM instead of MPEG. it will now work. all this will do is make your DVD player decode the mpeg audio to ordinary PCM sound, and pass that onto the reciever.
