  2. Interesting.

I'm not an OSX user myself, but I couldn't resist commenting on your conclusions regarding quality differences.

I agree with you that the differences in quality between DVD2One and the original DVD video is not great. But if you take a look at the first scene screenshot, top-right corner in the orange-colored field, then follow the stairs down to Robbie. There you see the evidence of DVD2One.

The original has smooth color changes which actually are a bit noisy and looks dithered. Quite similar to a digital camera picture taken at high-sensitivity ( = color noise). The same area in the DVD2One screenshot is quite different. You see no color noise, but instead it seems more "flat" but in a bad kind of way. You can also see a very slight block structure.

The difference between those two images are quite similar to comparing two JPEG Images; one with high quality/low compression and one with low quality/high compression with smoothing. Both looks good at a first glance, but the more you look at it, the more glitches you find.

But, to be honest: It is much easier to see these kind of errors on a screenshot than on motion video. A short note to all windows users out there: If you use DVDShrink you will see the very same effect that I've described above, but even more visible (and even more annoying).

As the vast majority of DVD material is of the MOTION picture type, using stills to compare quality is the functional equivalent of comparing an apple to an orange.

Pick a bad still from an encode, and any process can be shot down. Next!
