Very often files appear extremely dark on my monitor but are great when they're burned and shown on a tv.
I should be upgrading my monitor soon, it's too small. In the meantime, is there a way to increase the brightness, aside from the physical control on the monitor?
I appreciate any suggestions.

IF you have Adobe Photoshop or Photoshop Elements it comes with a built in Gamma corrector that will make your monitor as bright as you could possibly want it. After you install the program you can access it in the control panel under Adobe Gamma

If you do some degree of imaging/video work, that suggestion is highly recommended.
Most people don't have their monitors well calibrated at all and it is a definite requirement if you want to to get the gamma/contrast/brightness of your media clips right.
